Presentation Abstract

To address global challenges, 193 countries have committed to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Quantifying progress towards achieving the SDGs is essential to track global efforts towards sustainable development and guide policy development and implementation. However, systematic methods for assessing spatio-temporal progress towards achieving the SDGs are lacking. In addition, many global challenges are cross-boundary and entwined to affect the progress towards the SDGs, but little is known about how cross-boundary interactions, such as international trade, may impact the progress towards achieving SDGs. To advance the knowledge gap, this talk will first introduce the systematic methods we developed to quantify progress towards the 17 SDGs at national and subnational levels in China, and then talk about our most recent study that revealed the impacts of international trade on achieving national goals. Our research suggests the need to track the spatio-temporal dynamics of progress towards SDGs at different scales and across nations, and enhancing the accounting for and management of virtual resources embedded in trade is essential for achieving and balancing sustainable development for all.
