4. Painting Methods---1-2.Understanding Shape & Form

P32 - 00:00

So let’s talk about line drawing versus shapes. For me, It has been always a question which method to use when I was starting, I was like really confused by some people use line drawing. Some people use shapes and silhouettes which method is the best?

And the answer is both of them are great. because they both serve one single purpose is to express your ideas and new designs.

And they actually both complement each other, which I will be showing later on.

So let's just get started. And put these two guys. And so I will start giving you simple examples.

So remember when we were talking about design elements. I told you that we start with a shape, and then we give it a little bit of form. And then we give texture, and so on and so on.

So shape looks like a very convenient way to start things. because people are very good at recognizing shapes.

Let's say you put like a circle and people say, oh, it's a circle.

Remember when you were a kid and your parents will show you some kind of shapes and ask you what it is. Because this is how we learn.

Like for example, we see a human silhouette against a white background. And we see occasions that humans silhouette see the dog's silhouette and we know what it is.

So shape is a very good way to kind of created this graphic design that people will immediately read and understand what's going on.

let me give you couple of examples.actually we've already did a lot of those when we were doing our composition studies.

But what we basically did? We would put some kind of shapes, and you will immediately understand what was going on.

Like if we put some kind of rock or something, another rock next to it. And we would know what is it like? At least we would know what kind of shape  it is.

And then by just adding a few bits here and there, we will kind of refined and actually like emphasize what would these guys actually is like for example, because remember from our abstract compositions, we will take two identical shapes and convert one of those two like care. That could be a human being, . This could be the guys walking.

Or it could be just a rock. And all you need to add is just a little bit like simple clouds and stuff like that. And then you've got two completely different stories.

So shape is very good for films like graphic read. Whenever you look at the shape, that's why we do silhouette, right, that's why I'm gonna be doing like a gun designs. we were using shapes because it's a very simple way to kind of put things together and to make people to understand what you're trying to communicate.

like for example, if we take a gun design. Let's just expand this guy over here. And just by changing the silhouette, it would change the type of the gun as well. Like, for example, what is this kind? this is probably close combat kind of gun.

But then you go on, for example. Do you stretch this guy? You gave him a little bit of a different character. And now suddenly from a combat gun, it becomes something heavier,

because we know give it a little bit of a different silhouette. So let’s just cut it out.

So just by using these simple shapes, you can quickly and very efficiently create different characters, different designs and do it very quickly and in a very efficient way.

So I can keep going on like in the middle 5 minutes, I can handle it 10 of those, because shape is a very easy way to create this graphically.

You can create this silhouette that people would see it immediately recognized and tell you what this object is all like at least you will start telling your stories just by showing silhouette.

But I think at some point Silhouette is not enough to describe the form,

which is the next step for journey, right? Because looking at the guy, I cannot tell what form this guy has. Like, is it that simple rectangle or is it like a box. I never know, because there is no Information for me.

Same for these guys. For example, what shape of the this rock have, like other cylindrical shaped rocks, all the very sharp kind of squares which could dramatically change our design language and change our story as well.

Like if they are cylindrical, it then probably a man made if they're perfectly round.

All there could be some like random rocks, we never know. We need to use line drawing.

because line drawing Is the best tool to describe the form.

So for example, if this guy would put, start pulling lines. And then we changing the form of this object.

So now this object is we know that this is a 3 dimensional object.

We don't have any texture light on this guy. So we don't know exactly like is it a rectangular hole on the on the white wall? Or is it like something just like protruding? This, is like a cross section of this guy.

But at least we've got more Information than we have here. This is the next step for us. And for example, just by changing those in their lines, it completely changed the way this guy looks from the side view,

can take this guy. Boom. So this guy from the side, you look like this,  So this is where online drawing is more powerful and more useful if you're trying to describe the forms more precisely.

And actually like it's always the next step, after you've done in former silhouette studies, starting filling out these guys because in many cases silhouette is not enough to sell the design.

For example. I was walking on the movie was actually a guardians of the Galaxy and the silhouette was basically the sphere.

Like you cannot sell your idea just by putting the silhouette. you need to go in and start actually designing in a texture of this this guy. And selling the idea by using line drawing.

So that's where when we use line drawing. And this is when line drawing is more superior and more useful to the silhouette drawing.

and line drawing has another very, very powerful feature is that line drawing is the simplest tool that you ever have had in photoshop, because in photoshop or whatever, like if you are painting or if you’re drawing on paper as well because line drawing is just a simple line. the way you put those together will completely change the story, you trying to tell,

and it's very, very easy to kind of draw it because there's nothing else. There is no values, no light, no texture. It's purely lines.

And it's purely designing the frame some very efficient design tools.

So whatever I start doing something? I always think of, we will be the silly enough to describe my story of design. If he asked, I could start with the silhouette. If not, then I will just continue with a line drawing and kind of go back and forth.

Because once you put the line drawing, it's so easy. Like I'm using a kind of to select the areas I want to select.

And I quickly select something. And I start putting like some shape language,

which and that's why they complement each other. We're trying always to kind of alternate those, because once you start using them together, you will start creating all those design principles that it is discussed.

He will start creating a lot of contrast and it just makes your graphic much better. That's the main kind of difference between those two and the next chapter.

I will take those and show you how we can mix those together and automate our process as well.

4. Painting Methods---1-3.Shape & Form Together

P33 - 00:01

How these guys actually work together and they are very good. And probably the best tools to create their own designs and to be very fast and to be very flexible.

So I showed you the difference. When are we using shapes and wing, We start with a line drawing, but also I mentioned a few times that are actually they always across each other like they just compliment each other.

and let's start like, for example, with a line drawing, when we’re doing line drawing. When we start designing something, let’s make a character design.

And once again, I keep repeating it. But remember from the very first lessons, I kind of keep repeating that all you need to do when you're doing or designing something, try to kind of set your arm free. Don't try to construct things.

because that's the reason why I showed a lot of abstract exercise as well.

Because I was hoping that bells will allow you to kind of set your mind Free, set your design sense is Free and to be less constructive, because construction is something that is very useful.

But when it comes to designing things, you need to brainstorm. You need to sit down. And actually like instead of being worried about proportions and anatomy and stuff like that, you just setting your mind Free and purely thinking in terms of design.

So what are you doing line drawing, trying to avoid to actually construct like, this is a head,   you know what I mean? Like, try to be very precise. Try to construct something.  you will be constructing a lot.

You will be learning, but my personal preference when it comes to design, I try to set my mind Free and not think about it.

And if it's something looks off, I will just fix it afterwards. And for now, I would just carry on.

Let’s, for example, make a guy design like a simple. So this is a good and solid start for me to start thinking about design.

because I put the basic shapes and basic forms that I might need to start refining this guy.   And whoever this character is. But the problem with line drawing at this point is that a lot of things that they can change once I start putting shape language, like putting different colors and putting all those things that you would see in the final design.

So that's why I'm trying always to compliment those two guys together and trying to go back and forth between them,

because I can start refining this guy like a zoom in and start putting like a lot of line drawing Information. But I know that some bits will be lost because I will be using a lot of like big shapes and colors and texture.

And that's why be very careful about that time. And if your main goal is to concentrate on the story and design at the same time try not to waste time in over designing of things.

Just use the tools that will allow you in a very short amount of time to bring this guy to get in just to move on, that's why at some point, jump and start using shape straight away.

And just a side note, I'm not painting shadows. I’m not painting the color Information, the lighting Information, I’m purely putting some shape designs, because I know a lot of things will change depending on and how like we distribute our shading design,

And once again, you can see I'm really setting my arm flow just to change like I'm not putting light or anything like this. It's purely about shapes at this point.

Switching between line drawing and going back and forth and stuff like that. Like using repetition as well. For example, if I put like a stripe like, I’m put putting it over here.

And I improve my graphic design. And also I'm describing the form. Remember when you put the shapes like this, you kind of describing the form and the way it goes.

So as you can see, bold shapes and line drawing, they serve one single purpose to speed up your process and to kind of concentrate on design rather than on photo realism, allied all the texture.

All those guys they come off towards. And I will keep reminding you that shape comes first and then form.

And this is what we are doing right now. If you're describing the form using shapes and using the line drawing.

let's just put a little bit additional Info on this guy.  So now you can see like just by adding a lot of phase by design change dramatically.

So I didn't waste my time trying to, for example, if this was a gun trying to refine, putting all of those small details because I will never see them in my final design,

because it's a black kind of silly that it’ve gone. But I don't waste my time on my  designing this thing. I really want to spend my time on overall picture because, for example, if this was the scenario I was working on. And these guys, for example, standing on the kind of cliff. looking down, that would be horizon line.

And he would look down at some kind of space station somewhere like really far away from us.

That’s why I concentrate purely on this guy. And instead of going fully like wandering over, use a lot of shapes to kind of balance those to get.

So now I will show you a couple of really great tricks to actually even spent less effort to jumping between those two guys. Because when you start with a line drawing, then you need to portray or will you start with the shapes.

You need to put line drawings to describe the form. So you kind of like doing a lot of work like a lot of manual work.

And I think there’s a couple of really good methods that will help you to make some really nice shortcuts and very smart shortcuts.

Let me quickly show you what I mean. For example.

Let me just do some kind of shape. Say that this is a part of your design, Now, this guy is a purely a shape design,

It doesn't have any line Information or whatever. And we don't even know what shape this guy has, we know what shape this guy has, but we don't know what form it has. Like how thick it is.

What's the profile of this object and stuff like that. So there's a really quick and choose a filter in photoshop, a very powerful one, which is called stylized fine edges.

Let’s just separate this guy. Kind of convergence stuff into a line drawing, which is very good. Because if you can see, like previously, I also converted this guy,

let's say, for some reason, you want to change your graphic design. You want to start playing with the shapes that you have here, or even start laying down the color.

You don't need to do it from scratch. All you need to copy past this guy. dragged over press CTRL f.

P33 - 10:40Ctrl F线稿。

And now you've got a line drawing. It's not precise line drawing. It's not like it's following your lines, just outlines everything. But it's very cool because it can also give you a lot of abstract ideas.

And you can start developing your own character and come up with some unique solution that you wouldn't come up just by manually drawing those things.

And once again, excuse me. We are going back to this concept of abstraction. Because seeing this guy gives you so many different ideas of how you can actually start refining it. like all those small dip like accidents, they will give you a very solid base and set your imagination Free.

And you can start like really refining. Now you're not doing stuff from scratch. You're actually having a lot of like suggestions that give you a nice solid base to start refining this guy.

And like you can go even further. Like you can take this guy. Copy it over. Apply the filter once again,

and you get even like much stronger and different results. You can keep going and just like creating really cool different ideas because it's all line drawing. Then it's very easy.

For example, you can select the brush and start kind of filling these guys were different shapes whatever you like without actually manually paint in those, which is always thank you because you need to care about so many things, like proportions, anatomy forms and all that stuff.  But now this kind of method gives you a lot of suggestion. It gives you a lot of really interesting kind of abstract shapes that you can start using.

And basically, and you seem like just in the matter, just by applying the filter. I’m bringing this guy to the next level.

And because I'm using this filter gives you a lot of artifacts that actually who can help you to generates something can create something you would never create. If you were doing like manually painting this guy, because it all depends on your visual library. And if you don't have a visual and precise visual library,

if you haven't painted like for example, about lots of stuff like that. You need a reference. And you don't want to go to the reference at this point because you want to concentrate on your story.

and not like heavily designing this guy at this moment, you just designing a guy who will be looking at the space station.

So all you need is to come up with something very quick without using photos, without using reference, without using 3D, just using simple tool line shapes and jumping between those,

Same with the color. you can start like, for example, adding some color, let's say. Get a little bit of thread.

then you will start getting some really nice graphic design. let's take this guy to the next level, though. It's not finished yet.

Let's just copy these guys. A stylized filter, like a fine filter will give you a very solid kind of this abstract like drawing.

But sometimes I don't like the way. It's very kind of procedural and mechanic and artificial.

So if you want to push it towards like more traditional look, there is a way to do it.

And after applying line drawing filter. what do you need to go? You need to go to filters. Filter gallery.

and a black cutout filter. Basically what cutout does. It kind of reduces the amount of this small gathering Information that you have here. And it naturally gives you much more graphic looking, much more pleasant  look, which you probably need to make. If you're doing like a graphic novel or something.

And basically, you can experiment with those. Like, for example, I kind of have those guys. a music actions to activate those every time. So for example, if I go to windows actions, you see my line drawing F2, F1 and 3.

And F2 line drawing option is actually when it's fine edges and applies cut out at the same time.

So let me delete this guy actually. It was the wrong one copy merged this guy over here. And now I will press F2. let's see how it looks.

If I control Z, it created a line, a farm applied to fining edges. filter first, and then it's applied cut out, which simplified everything a little bit.

And what's good about it? Because you automate your process. You can quickly just by pressing F1 2 of 3 in just like get different line drawing results, which is great. Like, let's try and cut out only on this guy. And let's see how it looks.  Not only is it Free, it's not far away, but it just gives you, like if you keep applying this guy, I keep pressing CTRL f. It just simplifies it. And it looks like, I don't know, like a brush work like a watercolor.

and but you know when you're using like. Special kind of pants that gives you. And you just smudge it a little bit.

So it doesn't look as mechanical as the looks over here. Like for example, if I started playing filter this guy just keep going. just create some really nice and you can create even create a style for your graphic novel by just using this two options,

Also recognized another thing as well.what gives to you, And I don't think as well. It gives you some really nice edge control. Like it gives you a variety in the edge to be more precise,

because the biggest problem with line drawing, if you just draw an outline of something, like, let's say your drawing is cylinder and you're doing like. Just outline.

It just doesn't look right. Because there are so many things that you need to tweak lines. You need to kind of make it thinner. The stuff that we're seeing in the background becomes thinner.

And just do all the manual labor that it's really time consuming.

And when it comes to experience as well, you need to spend a good chunk and amount of time, trying to perfect those tools and trying to make everything working, but just by using those simple photoshop tools.

So you can dramatically ultimate your process and create a very nice graphic designs just by purely painting very simple. Like line drawing shape.

Picture and then take that one, apply those filters, and get so many variations. And now purely concentrate on design rather than thinking about line thickness or like the way you use the line and stuff like that. You purely concentrating now on design base.

And the rest is done by photoshop. I think that's it. I will give you a couple of more examples in the next chapter, but I hope you guys understand how you can go back and forth. And you can see it really quickly. You can derive a lot of really cool things. Thank you very much.
