The meaning of LAY DOWN ONE'S LIFE is to give up one's life for a good purpose : to die for a good cause. 牺牲

If one thing is analogous to another, the two things are similar in some way. 类似的

e.g. It will be a situation analogous to the scenario of lions led by donkeys to slaughter.

Soldiers regarded merely as material to be expended in war.

e.g.Like the mere cannon fodder that we witnessed in the First World War.
