Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich; und was wirklich ist, das ist vernünftig.

The above quote is a sentence that comes from Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's  "Elements of the Philosophy of Right" (German: "Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts"). In English, the quote translates to "What is reasonable is real; that which is real is reasonable." The book was published in 1820 and this particular quote of Objective Idealism was one of the most controversial philosophical propositions of its day. This quote is somewhat contentious today, principally because some believe that Hegel was making a normative claim for what is actually real: that what is real must be right. Of course, that is not always the case!
