第七节 由动词转变而来的副词

英语中由动词转变而来的副词给英语学习者带来阅读上的理解困难，由于平时很少

关注这种用法，学习者在汉翻英时也很少会使用这种构词方式。这种由动词转变而

来的副词译成汉语时，可以译成汉语的名词、动词、形容词等。

7.1 翻译时还原其动词功能

第一种情况是由动词转变而来的副词还原其动词功能，译成汉语的动词。

1. One of them helpfully let down the jack while another held Arabella’s back door wide open.

他们中有一个过来帮他把千斤顶拿了下来，而另一个把车的后座门开得大大的。

“helpfully”是由动词“help”转变来的，译成汉语动词“帮”。

2. In an editorial, the Lancet says the possibility that the suicide of a child could be

provoked by a supposedly beneficial drug would be a catastrophe.

《柳叶刀》中一篇社论说，一种被认为有效的药物居然可能导致儿童自杀，

这真是一场灾难。

“supposedly”是由动词“suppose”转变来的，译成汉语动词“认为”。

3. She turned over the pages invitingly before the child's eyes.

她在孩子眼前地翻书页，试图引起孩子的读书欲望。

“invitingly”是由动词“invite”转变来的，译成汉语 “试图引起孩子的注意”。

4. Pentagon officials deny news reports that Pakistani soldiers fired at two U.S.

helicopters late Sunday for allegedly violating Pakistan's airspace in a suspected

attack on a militant base. （suspectedly attacking a militant base）

消息称周六晚些时候巴基斯坦士兵对美国两架直升机开火，声称它们在对可疑

军事基地进行打击时侵犯了巴领空，白宫官员对此予以否认。

“allegedly”是由动词“allege”转变来的，译成汉语动词“声称”。

5. London should undoubtedly be better than it is, but it is still a thrilling place.

毫无疑问，伦敦应该比现在更好，但它仍然是一个激动人心的地方。 “undoubtedly”是

由动词“undoubt”转变来的，译成汉语“毫无疑问”。

6. Hopefully, we will continue to remain undefeated. 希望我们继续保持不败。

“hopefully”是由动词或名词“hope”转变来的，译成汉语动词“希望”。

7. Those findings we hopefully can and will be able to apply to other patients.

我们希望能把这些发现用到其他病人身上。（同上）

8. The view of the learners is an organic one, with each new role growing

developmentally out of the one preceding. These role changes are not easily or

automatically achieved.

把这些学习者看作一个有机的整体，每一个新角色都会在上一个角色基础上进

一步发展。这些角色的变化不会被轻易实现或自动实现。

“developmentally”是由动词“develop”转变来的，译成汉语动词“发展”。

9. The problems start when people of different ages, sexes, and cultures try to smile

encouragingly at each other, for although the basic expression is universally

recognized, each social group develops its own system of conversational signals.

当不同年龄、性别以及不同文化背景的人们试图以微笑来相互鼓励时，问题随之

而生，因为尽管人们已经普遍认同这种基本表情，但每一社会组织都形成了本组织

的交流信号系统。

“encouragingly”是由动词 “encourage”转变来的，译成汉语动词“鼓励”。
