  • tête-à-tête: The French term "tête-à-tête" (pronounced "tet-ah-tet") is commonly used in English as well, and it translates literally to "head-to-head." Its primary meaning refers to a private conversation or an intimate meeting between two people. The phrase is often used to describe a confidential discussion or a private, one-on-one encounter. In a broader sense, it can also imply a close, private relationship or an exclusive conversation.

eg. He seldom appeared really animated.

  • counterbalance: to have an equal but opposite effect on something so that it does not have too much of a particular characteristic

eg. But, to counterbalance these advantages, Mr. Darcy had considerable patronage in the church, and his cousin could have none at all.
