I can still remember the night I walked into a local Tokyo restaurant in Japan and everyone stared at me in silence.
“What’s everyone looking at?” One of the Japanese cooks began laughing to add life to the awkward moment.
Being black in Japan is a unique experience, but not exactly how I expected it to be. Most Japanese residents were friendly and very business minded.

They cared more about the color “green” (my US dollar) than they did about my skin color. I got around the city easily and experienced very little racism.
Tokyo is the biggest city in the world and you will get lots of looks and stares while you travel through as a black person. Many people are curious about you and will ask you questions about why you decided to come to Japan.

Japanese women can be very shy so you should change your approach if you’re a black man. It’s easier to meet women through social connections and friends because Japanese people can be cold to outsiders they don’t know.
I spent the majority of my time in Roppongi, the neighborhood for expats. You will find lots of black expats living there as well. Spending time in Roppongi made me feel at ease since they are many western expats living there.

The most difficult situation was the language barrier since very few Japanese people speak English. If you want to enjoy your trip more, then learn Japanese before your trip.
You’ll be fine if you are planning a short trip since Japan is very safe and friendly towards foreigners. Respect the culture, stay away from excessive drinking, and you should have a great time.

When I was in Tokyo, specifically Roppongi, there were many, many Nigerians. Japan is a one of the most homogeneous countries in the world…I for sure felt like an outsider as a white person.

Leart Japanese before you go there is stated in the article, as it were a matter of a couple of hours or days. I am a linguist from Hungary speaking a fluent English and Russian and at a lower level three other Indoeuropan languages. I learned Japanese as well, after one year I knew about a thosand kanji, hiragana and katakana, Yet I was unable to read any text in that language. Speaking was also limited to a few simple utterances.

Japan is insular, and homogeneous. They have not seen the likes of you.
Such is/was the case in my country of Sweden. The first time we (at school) saw a Korean girl….!
Boys wanted her. Girls wanted to be her. (I guess some girls also wanted her!)

Greg Price
Japanese generally appear to be friendly because that is what is expected of them. The reality may be very different.

Ironically, in some ways living in Japan while black is even safer than here in the United States. I lived in Aomori Prefecture for three year and absolutely enjoyed the Japanese people and culture. In all, I live in Asia for 8-years in three countries.
I simply learned the language as well as I could and adhered to their customs. As a result, my wife, two small children and I roamed the country and never felt threatened. Conversely……

Ever since I became sentient here in the country of my birth, twenty-four hours a day, 7-days a week, I’m constantly aware of being disliked and even hated by a large segment of the majority. It is difficult and perhaps impossible for most white Americans to comprehend the precarious circumstance under which black citizens live from minute to minute.
