A couple of years ago, a trucker-capped and woodsy Lana Del Rey popped up in a sequoia grove to debut a new song she eventually called “Coachella-Woodstock in My Mind.” At the time, this was out of character: She kept such a tight lid on her image that she was among the last pop stars you’d expect to release a half-finished song on purpose. But these days it seems to come naturally: She looks composed and almost unaware of the camera as she records “Looking for America,” a new song written in response to a weekend of bloodshed: the 31 people who died in gun massacres in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio this past Saturday and Sunday.

Like “Coachella,” “Looking for America” begins with a road trip through California. Watching children at play, she murmurs that she “used to only worry about them after dark.” “I’m still looking for my own version of America/One without the gun, where the flag can freely fly,” she sings. It’s a disconcerting statement coming from Lana, the woman who practically willed her own dreamlike, slyly ironic vision of America into existence.

看着孩子们玩耍时,她喃喃自语道,她“used to only worry about them after dark(过去只会在天黑之后担心他们)”。她唱道:“I’m still looking for my own version of America/One without the gun, where the flag can freely fly(我仍在寻找我心目中的美国/一个没有枪支的美国,国旗可以在那里自由飘扬)”这句话出自打雷之口,有些令人不安。

But even Lana Del Rey still has to live here. “Used to go to drive-ins and listen to the blues/So many things that I think twice about before I do,” her song goes. This nostalgic Americana doesn’t just go back to Woodstock—it predates the Kennedy assassination. Now each of us who visit a public space live in fear, and in fear begin to curtail our own freedoms.

她的歌是这样唱的:“Used to go to drive-ins and listen to the blues/So many things that I think twice about before I do(我过去常去影院听布鲁斯,很多事情我都要三思而后行)”这种怀旧的美式风格不仅可以追溯到Woodstock,还可以追溯到肯尼迪遇刺之前。
