Big Words简要总结(1-20期:记诵)

1. wrong=spurious  a.站不住脚的

≈untenable ≈ plausible 

2. depend on=is predicated on 建立在…基础上

(If an idea or argument is predicated on sth, it depends on the existence or truth of this thing.)

断言:predicate/assert/aver/maintain

 

3. question=impugn  v.质疑

(to cause people to doubt someone's character, qualities, or reputation by criticizing them)

词根法:im-=in  pug=fight impugn=to attack

引申:pugilist 拳击师 pugnacious 好斗的

 

4. disgraceful=humiliating=ignominious  a.可耻的

:(especially of events or behaviour)embarrassing because of a completely failure

词根法:ig-=not  nomin=‘nomen’=name

 

5. pugnacious a.好与人争辩的;比较强势的

:wanting to start an argument or fight, or expressing an argument or opinion very forcefully

词根法:pug=fist→fight -acious=有倾向的

同根词(-acious):

audacious a.无畏的;有冒险精神的

capacious a.宽敞的

tenacious a.坚毅的;顽强的(=persistent)

 

6. pugilistic a.拳击的(=relating to boxing)

 

7. empathically ad.斩钉截铁地;强调地

→a emphatic denial/rejection 断然的否认/拒绝

同型词法:emphasize empathically

 

8. misnomer n.错误的称谓

:(a name that is not correct or does not suit what it refers to, or a use of such a name)

词根法:mis-=wrong→mistaken misjudge

Nomer=name

 

9. Unstable=precarious a.不稳定的;动荡的;会变得更糟的

:in danger because not firmly fixed likely to fall or suffer harm

联想法:pre-=before cari-=care 事先担心→发愁

:an unpleasant or confusing situation that is difficult to get out of or solve

11. Regulate=stipulate v.规定

(:to say exactly how something must be or must be done)

同型词法:stipulate to stimulate the development of the economy 规定刺激经济发展

 

12. perfect=impeccable a.无可挑剔的(侧重于挑不出错的)

(:without mistakes or faults;perfect)

词根法:pecca-=“peccare”: to err, to sin

联想法:peck→woodpecker→im pecc able 啄不出来的→无懈可击的

 

13. Severely criticize=assail v.猛烈攻击;严厉批评

:to attack someone violently or criticize someone strongly

联想法:sail to assail the theory 出海去抨击这一理论(like 麦哲伦环球航行证实了地圆说)

Assail v.困扰:to disturb or upset sb. Severely

e.g. be assailed by worries/doubts/fears 为焦虑/疑虑/担心所困扰

 

14. sheepish a.知道自己做错事情而不好意思

(:embarrassed because you know that you have done something wrong or silly)

词组:blush with a sheepish smile 羞愧得露出尴尬的神情

 

15. lactose intolerant 乳糖不耐受

Flatulent a.胀气的

(:affected by gas in the intestine;likely to fart)

 

16. broken=dilapidated a.破败的;年久失修的

:(esp. of a structure)in bad condition and needing repair

词根法:di-=apart digest digress

lapid=stone→lapidary a.优雅精确的;宝石雕刻的 lapidate v.投石

→broken stones

 

17. strict=draconian a.法律过于严厉

(:draconian laws, government actions, etc. Are extremely severe, or go further than what is right or necessary)

Draco(德拉古:“轻罪理应处死,至于更大的罪还找不到比死刑更重的刑罚。”)→draconian

 

18. smart=ingenious a.方法巧妙的;制作精妙的

(of a person)clever, original,and inventive

 

区分:genius vs ingenious

Genius n.天才

Ingenious a.天才的

That’s ingenious! That’s why you are a genius!

 

19. naive=ingenuous a.真诚的(很傻很天真)

(:honest, sincere and trusting sometimes in a way that seems silly)

区分:ingenious vs ingenuous

同型词法:an ingenious and ingenuous person

 

20. childish=puerile adj.孩子气的

(:behaving in a silly way, not like an adult)

词源法:puerils(Latin)→puerile puer-=boy child pupil

同型词法:pure puerile 纯粹的孩子气的
