1.3 表示隐喻

 1.The kaleidoscope of shifting interests of the nations during the negotiation made it impossible to sort out the “winners” and “losers”. 

谈判期间，各国的利益变化不定，好像万化筒似的，这就使人难以分辨出究竟谁是“胜者 “，谁是“输家”。 

注意这句中的短语“made it impossible”，与“opens a possibility”、“give somebody a platform and an opportunity”，还有动词“permit”、“allow”、“invite”等放在一起学习，后面会把 它们放在一起总结。

2. Above him there was only a pale disc of sky. 在他上方只是一片圆圆的暗淡的天空。

11. The atmosphere is a blanket of gases around the earth. 大气层像毯子一样裹住地球。 从上面例句可以看出，前面的一个名词是喻体，后面的名词是本体。这是隐喻的一种表达 方式，“像…一样的”。

1. acknowlegement n 承认 

mental acknowledg(e)ment of…. 精神层面上承认。 这个短语还可以变成“acknowlegement of something mentally”, 这涉及到翻译中的一个技 巧，后面会详解。

2. acquaintance n 相识的人。

an elderly American woman of my acquaintance. 我认识的一位美国老太太。 “my acquaintance”做后置定语，与 “my newly acquainted classmates” 做比较，体会其用 法。

3. acquisition n 获得；得到 

a. acquistion people. 采购人员。

b. acquisition malpractice. 采购玩忽职守。 上面两个短语与汉语思维模式顺序一致。

4. acronym n 首字母缩略词 

It’s full of acronyms. 满是首字母缩略词。 如“NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization”北大西洋公约组织。

5. activity n 活动 

fund raising activities. 筹款活动。
