最新一期《时代》周刊封面，黑框了......
当地时间9月10日，美国《时代》周刊公布了最新一期的封面，视觉效果十分震撼。
在纯黑背景上，布满了密密麻麻的白色文字，仔细看，可以发现这是一连串的死亡数字集合↓↓
2020年2月29日，死亡1例；
3月2日，死亡5例；
4月14日，死亡2455例；
4月15日，死亡2609例；
4月16日，死亡2176例；
……
9月8日，死亡445例
......
整个封面，记录了美国从2月29日到9月8日的每日新增死亡病例数，这些数据又汇成一个触目惊心的硕大数字——200000，呈现出美国新冠死亡病例数即将接近20万的现实。
而在封面下方，唯一的红色字体写着“一场美国式失败”（An American Failure）。
“希望这个封面能唤醒麻木的人们”
对于这个封面，《时代》周刊主编爱德华·费尔森塔尔在一篇文章中解释说：美国很快就将跨越一个毁灭性的里程碑——有20万人因新冠肺炎而死。
That death toll – equivalent to US deaths in more than three Vietnams, or the entire population of Salt Lake City – is the world’s largest by far.
“这一数字已经超过美国在越战中死亡人数的3倍，相当于犹他州盐湖城的总人口。在全球各个国家的死亡人数中，美国更是高居第一。”
费尔森塔尔介绍道：
For this week’s US cover, we turned to artist John Mavroudis, who – using data from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center – handwrote the death counts in America on every one of the 193 days between Feb 29, the first confirmation of a COVID-related death in the US, and Sept 8, as it neared time to go to press.
我们邀请了艺术家约翰·马夫鲁迪斯进行了这次封面创作，他根据约翰·霍普金斯大学发布的新冠疫情统计数据，亲手书写了自2月29日（即美国第一例死亡病例公布日期）起到9月8日（即本刊发行前夕）期间——总共193天里的美国每日新增死亡病例数。
封面设计者马夫鲁迪斯说，希望这份封面能唤醒麻木的人们：
“I really hope this cover is a wake-up call for those who are numbed to this catastrophe,” says Mavroudis. “Science and common sense are the answers to this crisis.”
“我真的希望这份封面能唤醒那些对这场灾难已经感到麻木的人们。科学和常识才是应对这场危机的答案。”
《时代》周刊史上第二次用黑框
据悉，这是《时代》杂志历史上第二次使用黑色边框封面，上一次还是在“9·11”恐怖袭击之后。
“一场美国式失败”
《时代》杂志在封面故事中写道：这场“美国式的失败”绝大部分要归咎于美国政府的失责。
If, early in the spring, the US had mobilized its ample resources and expertise in a coherent national effort to prepare for the virus, things might have turned out differently.
如果，美国在今春早些时候就动员起国内的丰富资源和专业技术，在全国范围内同心协力地应对疫情，那么如今的情况可能会有所不同。
If, in midsummer, the country had doubled down on the measures (masks, social-distancing rules, restricted indoor activities and public gatherings) that seemed to be working, instead of prematurely declaring victory, things might have turned out differently.
如果，美国在仲夏时加大力度执行那些行之有效的防疫措施，如戴口罩、保持社交距离、限制室内活动与公共聚会等，而不是过早宣布胜利，那么如今的情况可能会有所不同。
The tragedy is that if science and common sense solutions were united in a national, coordinated response, the US could have avoided many thousands of more deaths this summer.
悲剧在于，如果全国能协调一致，在新冠疫情面前给出符合科学和常识的解决方案，那么今年夏天美国本可以避免数千人的死亡。
