The Billboard Top 40 is full of “clean minded pornographers,” to borrow a phrase from the film critic Pauline Kael: self-proclaimed studs who drone on and on about sex, but fail to make the act sound sexy. With his 2018 album Bloom, Troye Sivan proved himself to be the antithesis of Adam Levine and Liam Payne. Bloom didn’t exaggerate its desire; it was sly and sensual, luxuriating in the anticipation of touch. “I’ve been saving myself for you, baby,” Sivan sang on the title track, a celebration of queer sexuality. He knows dwelling in that tension can be almost as seductive as the real thing.

However, when it comes to releasing his own music, he’s decided: enough with the waiting! After days languishing at home under quarantine, Sivan declared a little over a week ago that he would buck his label’s plans and “leak” his own music. Yesterday, he made good on this promise. His latest single, “Take Yourself Home,” is about feeling stultified by the life you’ve created on your own. “If I’m gonna die/let me die somewhere pretty,” he mopes with a malaise reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, albeit with less chiaroscuro. His delivery has always been muted to mixed effect; this time, it reinforces his fatigue nicely. The single accumulates momentum as it goes—his cool sigh livened by gospel cries and a shuffling beat—ultimately taking itself out on a cleansing tech house outro. It’s a slow, surprising progression from chill pessimism to sweaty abandon; like his past work, it doesn’t start explosively but rewards patience. You can imagine a wearied body moving itself to this song, first still, then swaying, freed by the idea of returning home.
