 29 Lesson 5 - Photobashing Basics Part 5 - Environment Demo PT1

Welcome back. We’re hopping right into it by actually doing something that isn’t a bird in a hat with pancakes in the table something that most likely you won't be doing. although if you do, do let me know, cause that's probably a really cool project that you're on.

So we're back to the age old question, little red riding hood Versus Cinderella. again, my heart go out to little red riding hood. Don't worry, i'll get Cinderella soon enough. But today I will still stick with our little red and our good old wolf, except this time I'm gonna take a twist. And for our photo bath piece, I'm going to take the scene into the snowy mountains.

This time, I'm not really concerned about what little red actually looks like, because our main concern this time, is about how to actually do a proper photo bash environment. I'm not doing this necessarily to only show you environments, but typically for photo bashing, that is what you would be creating.

Because unlike animation, animation, you need to actually draw out every single scene essentially, where you're creating something from scratch.

But with live action movies, you usually have an actor or actress who is your character already. And the story boards will tell you how the movie will flow.

And even within a more hyper realistic video games, because the character had very defined in strict models. And game play isn't usually focused on their face.

There’s not that much of a need for very pictorial composition within photo bashing for video games and live action. It's usually very much production based and environment focused.

That isn't to say that we shouldn't have strong composition. in a nutshell. I will just be bashing what is usually most typically seen in expected within the industry.

Let's say that for this piece, I'm specifically thinking of doing live action. So this photo bash piece would be for a live action movie.

What size of canvas should I use? Drum roll. If you chose between 1.85 and 2.34 then you are correct.

So as you can see, I have opened up a canvas that is super long. Wow, this is like Christopher Nolan size long, this is going to be a 2.34 aspect ratio. This is much longer than the visual development piece that we used previously. So there's a lot more space to cover. But don't worry.

Thankfully with photo bashing. The best part is that most of the drawing specifically is already done for you, because the photograph itself has more detail than you could ever draw well enough within a day or a super short amount of time. As always, let's begin with an opening sketch and throwing down some ideas.

I’m thinking about something where like the house would be here. And maybe there's like a little bridge or a fence here. And I wanted to be a bit on a hill. So if you walk down here, you get to a little lake.

And there would be rocks here. There will be a snow bank here.

There's some kind of snow hill over here, surrounded by nice trees, a few different items here. I'm not super sure what these things would be just yet, but that's completely okay.

Some trees here, little red. I'm thinking that they would either be on the snowbank maybe props here, looking towards the house. So this would be grandma's house.

So maybe they're looking towards the house or they're already walking away over the lake going to grandma's house.

And we have a beautiful mountain scene in the background, because I am a huge fan of mountains. This is exactly the level of sketch that I would do, right before I start going into look for my photos. I just want a general sense in general idea of what I want to do.

This is a perfect angle where it's kind of very level. So its levels to your eye, was around the horizon line kind of being very standard middle.t Demo PT1 P29 - 04:14

In terms of dividing the composition, I would say the house is on a 1/3 plain and little red could be on another plain of 1/3, perhaps here.

And just because I still love the idea of little red having a little mule, I think I'm gonna have a little mule or just some kind of little a question creature, a little red can be riding it carrying their little basket.

I don't really care about little red at this time, what I'm really worried about is the overall environment.

So with that out of the way, let's go in to look for some photos. Before I begin the search, though, I think to myself, what am I going to need?

First of all, I'm gonna be needing a good house, preferably a snowy house, something in the snow. I'm gonna need a mule donkey or another some kind of a question creature.

I'm gonna need my little red, so red, I just write a donkey. I'm gonna need a lake. I'm gonna need some rocks. Snowy rocks! I'm also gonna need a snowy trees and I’m also need a snowy mountain and a pretty sky.

and of course, the most important thing, snow in general, just like lands and lands of snow. And perhaps a fence, Question Mark.

I’ll see. Now I'm just going to go into Google images and drag down whatever the heck I see that is suitable and big enough size.

as I'm going through Google and just looking for things that I could use. Here are some of the key aspects that I always look out for.

Number one, always go to tools and select large that way you weed out anything that isn't usable in the first place.

I also look for something that has neutral lighting. So you can see here there's a cloud in the sky, typically a good sign about neutral lighting.

One fantastic thing about snow, as I said in the previous videos, is that snow usually has overall neutral cast lighting.

What you want to avoid would be something more like this, where you can see a clear shadow in the snow.

This is something really difficult to photo bash or photoshop out. something like this,

however, where the snow shadow isn't too heavy would be easier to handle.

I also want to make sure that I use the same kind of time of day. I should avoid things are at nighttime or things that have light on them.

Instead, I should stick with things that have a neutral kind of lighting that I can easily paint on Top of if I want to make any adjustments and changes.

So an image like this would actually be quite perfect. You can see that this snow here is much darker than the white snow here. So that's also another thing to consider when you're looking for photos.

Try to have all your photos kind of be able to match each other in the very beginning. That way you don't have to do as much editing in the future. Now you're probably thinking, gosh, there are so many criteria to think about what you're looking for photos, yes, you're absolutely right.

In fact, many people who start off photo bashing completely underestimate the time it takes to look for photos.

In fact I know for people in the movie industry, sometimes when they're looking to the photo bash of piece, they would actually spend around half the day around 3 to 4 hours just looking for the appropriate photos.

This is why I recommend that you actually go and take photos yourself that you go out and procure your own photos. I myself, when I travel and go to a new location, i've always bring either my own camera or a friend who has a much more powerful camera than I do, to help me take photos of the environment so that we can use those photographs later for photo bashing.

The more you use your own photos, also the less risk of copyright infringement and all those other kinds of things.

also, nothing feels better than using your own photos and creating a really cool piece out of it. Trust me. So with that, we are going to get straight to it.

Precisely like with our demo with the bird, i'll look for the items in my sketch that I need. Then I procure the photos that have the exact same items that I need with my sketch. For example, i've grabbed the lake here. I've grabbed a house, I'm grabbing wooden logs and I'm grabbing snow banks and rocks. And every single item that I specifically pointed out in my sketch.

today, we're just going to get all the photos down. Photo bashing, especially for those who are new to it, is a very technology heavy process. So instead of me trying to fit the entire process into one video or even into one module, we're going to use two modules to show this entire process.

So for today, just now my main goal is simply to procure the photos and place them into the scene and stitch them together,

taking it to a finish. And all the fancy photoshop footwork will be saved for module six, the next episode. Because as you can see, this video is already getting quite long. And we have just started. This is a process that takes a lot of thinking, doing and redoing. You're not going to get it right the first time. This is because it's more like a collage. It's not like drawing or you can draw it and get it right immediately.

As you can see, I have two different houses here and I'm trying to figure out which one is going to be a better fit.

I like the more orange, the lighter coloured house. I like that one better because it has a bit more of an older feeling. Whereas the original house that I pulled up is a little bit too modern, a little bit too new.

Just like how I mention a photo bashing is like a collaging. You can see that I'm taking parts of the old house and fitting it on to the new house.

You have to be very careful with things like houses or buildings because the perspective is very easy to mess up.

You can see I definitely am adjusting and readjusting and going on over and over and over, trying different ways to make sure that i can successfully stitch in this new house together with the old house.

to make my house feel like they're coherent. Because you can clearly see that there is one patch of houses that’s light. And there's another patch of house that dark.

I use the color balance tool so that I can adjust my colours to be a little bit more harmonious with each other.

Everything you're seeing so far such as from adding in snow banks or distorting it, taking things out, putting things in, this is literally everything that we saw in the bird demo.

using lasso tool, perspective, warp, distort, anything under the sun. So just relax and enjoy a nice collage time lapse.

However, if there is anything that is very important of note or new Information that I will make sure to slow down, pause and explain it to you fully.

for example. We're gonna be doing that right now. You see on this river bank here, there's a little portion that is kind of miss in kind of a hole. And what you can do, actually you can take the lasso tool, select it, click edit, fill, content aware fill and it will fill it out for you using photoshop AI system, really need.

here is another one. Now whenever your photo bashing, you are bound to run into this, the dreaded stock photo image, the one where there is water marks and water logos all over the place.

No matter what you do one day in your life, for whatever reason, you are going to encounter a stock photo image where you inevitably do need to take the logo out.

However, disclaimer, if you are ever doing a major publishing work and commercial work or anything that has to be published online under a company name, make sure that you buy and purchase whichever stock photos that you use.

for your personal work. It is okay to use stock images because at the end of the day you are not going to selling this image.

As you can see, what I’ve used so far are not stock photo images. Trust me, there's really good photos and images out there. You don't need to stick with any stock photos, but I do know that eventually you will definitely find your way here.

So let me show you the way that I get rid of these logos.  I go to the heal tool right here.

And I'm going to increase my brush size until that It is just around the size enough to cover out a single logo, let’s zoom in a little bit more. So you can see what I'm doing. I take my heal brush and I just brush over the logo. And photoshop does the rest. I guess photoshop just knows that you are trying to get rid of an annoying logo. So because I only need to get this pile of wood right here, I'm only going to remove any of the lines that I see here on this pile of wood. I think that's a little bit smaller. And now our pile of wood is ready to go.

So I'm gonna go back and jump right into it. Use my lasso tool and take it out.

It's kind of like a mini surgery on your photo bash. Pretty fun. now to make sure that you guys can take a bit of a brain break.

And so this video doesn't get too long. I'll catch you guys in the next video. As we take this piece to a finish in terms of stitching, catch you there.
