翻译批改案例分享——论“纵译”与“横译”

翻译批改业务是应培训学生的提议拓展的一项业务，适合不太能看出自己译文问题的学生或其它用户。有些第一次接触的用户可能会要求看一下一级翻译证书（其实我本人没有晒学历和资格证书的习惯，在朋友圈也没晒过），为了节约一一自证的时间，在此发一下（请勿盗图，侵权必究）。

原文：[4.1]人类文明的发展和文化全球化的结果，都意味着必须依赖知识的传承和横向的交流。 [4.2]人的知识可以有多种来源，或从古至今，或跨国越界，交流的结果是使人类生活在一个“纵译”与“横译”的世界里。 [4.3]全球几乎所有的文化都是一件百衲衣，每个文化的地点都是诸文化的一个交流地。 [4.4]介于两种文化之间互动而生成的“横译”活动，渐渐成为文化创造的新基础，一种新的生产空间。
学生译文：

•The development of human civilization and the outcome of cultural globalization both connote that people must depend on the pass of knowledge from one generation to another as well as horizontal communication. People’s knowledge can have multiple kinds of origins such as the history from ancient times to the present, transnational communication, etc., and the result of exchanges is to make humankind live in a world comprised by “horizontal translation” and “vertical translation.” Virtually every culture globally is like a piece of clothing made by a lot of workers, and the place of every culture is all a place to communicate in numerous cultures. Therefore, the activity of “horizontal translation” generated by the interaction between two countries has gradually become a new basis of cultural creation and a new production space.

思维引导：

•[4.1]人类文明的发展和文化全球化的结果，都意味着必须依赖知识的传承和横向的交流。

① “传承 ” pass or passing on?

先看名词是动词形式时的区别

E.g. Please pass the bread.

E.g. Could you pass it on to Laura when you've finished reading it?

表示“延续性”（有传递对象“to...”的语言标志）时，介词on要加上；另外，pass作名词时表示“a successful result”（通过/成功做到某事），这里要用动名词作名词。

•[4.2]人的知识可以有多种来源，或从古至今，或跨国越界，交流的结果是使人类生活在一个“纵译”与“横译”的世界里。

① “来源” origin or source?

先看词义辨析

E.g. He studied the origin and development of the nervous system.

E.g. According to government sources, many MPs are worried about this issue.

origin一般指“the place where it began or the begining of sth."（发源地/原产地/起源）；source表示”信息来源、渠道“，和原文意思契合。

② multiple kinds of origins or multiple sources?

kinds of和a的区别在于文内有没有强调种类/类别，如果没有，则为泛指。

③ “或从古至今，或跨国越界”修饰的中心词是什么？

“来源”，用形容词短语可做后置定语修饰。译文multiple kinds of origins such as the history from ancient times to the present, transnational communication对原文意思过度引申。

修改译文：

Our knowledge can have multiple sources, both ancient and otherwise, or transnational.

注：and otherwise表示除ancient sources以外的其它纵向（时间维度：古今）来源，or后是横向（空间维度：跨国界）来源。这里也是呼应第三段提到的纵向翻译和横向翻译。

④ the result of句型结构是不是受到中文影响较大？“交流的结果是使”要表达的是什么逻辑关系意思？

指“交流的作用”的意思。

⑤ comprised by “horizontal translation” and “vertical translation.”的语言组织造成语意表达的是世界只有横向翻译和纵向翻译两个维度。细究逻辑不大成立。还是说这两种翻译活动在人类生活的世界非常之多？

修改译文：

•Our knowledge can have multiple sources, both ancient and otherwise, or transnational. Communication enables us to live in a world where the horizontal translation and the vertical translation abound.

注：“横向翻译/纵向翻译”是一种翻译类型，表示类型时要在名词前加定冠词。且两个名词第一次出现时才是概念引述，需要打单引号或双引号，后面出现时不再是引述概念了，也就不需要打单引号或双引号。

•[4.3]全球几乎所有的文化都是一件百衲衣，每个文化的地点都是诸文化的一个交流地。

① “百衲衣”这个比喻要保留吗？中心意思是什么？译文保留比喻的修辞但达到玩文字游戏（雅）和传达中心意思（达）的效果了吗？

“百衲衣”中心意思指“合力形成的产物”。

② “每个文化的地点”是什么意思？字对字硬译成the place of every culture是否达意？

指“具有共同文化属性的地理单位”

culture area, also called cultural area, is a contiguous geographic area within which most societies share many traits in common. 

culural area或culture area比较符合原文“文化地”的内核意思。

③ “都是诸文化的一个交流地”修饰“地方”的前置定语是什么？

“诸文化交流” ，a place to communicate in numerous cultures有些字对字的硬译。可尝试抽象名词的使用。

修改译文：

•Virtuall every culture globally is born of concerted efforts, and every cultural area/culture area is a hub for intercultural communication.

• [4.4]介于两种文化之间互动而生成的“横译”活动，渐渐成为文化创造的新基础，一种新的生产空间。

① “……而生成”在这句除了表达因果逻辑关系还有什么关系？

也交代“横译”活动产生的时间/背景。

② generated by这个被动语态有什么问题？

过分强调被动性，而这里是指“横译活动在文化交际过程中自发形成”。这里可以用一个能和主语形成主动语态且表示因果关系和交代时间（①）的短语结构arising from。

③ 译文 interaction between two countries翻译的是“两个国家”，是不是把原文的“两种文化”概念缩窄了？

文化有时包含多个国家。比如，东南亚文化包含的国家有很多个，文化和国家并不能等同。

修改译文：

•Therefore, the horizontal translation arising from  intercultural interactions has gradually become a new basis of cultural creation and a new production space.

注：“横向翻译/纵向翻译”是一种翻译类型，表示类型时要在名词前加定冠词。且两个名词第一次下定义出现时（第三段）才是概念引述，需要打单引号或双引号，后面出现时不再是引述概念了，也就不需要打单引号或双引号。

结语

•1.好译文的标准：达意、语篇连贯性（通顺、逻辑）；雅（文字游戏）

•2. 人类信息的组织方式：主题（Theme）、引出新信息；新信息变旧信息，引出新信息；新信息变旧信息，引出新信息……
