Airi Pan 34.17 Foolproof Photobashing

34 Lesson 6 - Foolproof Photobashing Part 2 - Film Color PT1
Welcome back. Wow! You must have grown taller than the last time I saw you. Right now clearly our piece has something, has atmosphere, has some depth, but there's a lot of soul missing from this piece. This piece is most definitely not finished yet.
One of the biggest pieces of that soul that is missing is the fact that it doesn't have much of a color.
It's kind of just grey and white and really boring.
So remember, this piece is meant to emulate a live action concept art piece.
Therefore, the example that we should try to strive for, is going to be live action.
So my color preference, rather than going into a real life and to find some average color reference, I'm actually going to go into movies and look at references from movies.
So this is a shot from the movie called the assassination Of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. long name. You can see that there is a very movie like quality about this picture.
This is because of movies. When they do post production, they put a filter over their movies.
So taking a look at this snowy day in the movie, now we take a look at another snowy day.
This is what a real life snowy day should actually look like.
You can see that there's a very big difference. So movies use filters to make them feel either like moodier heavier, just whatever kind of feeling they want to convey.
This is the reason why when you're watching something like, I don't know, batman, like versus superman, man of steel, like DC movies, why those feels so dark and heavy,

because they're basically instant gram filtered to be edging and moody and kind of like a nasty teenager. But it works. It works really well.
So we need to really capture that feeling. So rather than using this reference image which would get me a very cheerful house, I'm going to go for the movie, the assassination of Jesse James by the coward, Robert Ford. Kind of a nasty feeling. I want this feeling, not this. So we are going to banish this by deleting it. It's gone.
What I really like though about this screen shot in particular even though the movie the assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford, that is a really long movie name. We're just going to call it the assassination of Jesse James. Or I don't know Jesse James movie for sure that I don't want to say that every single time I have to explain this movie.
But the reason why I chose this particular screen shot is because it actually includes a little village. It has snow, it has mountains and trees in the background. So it is the ideal image. This is not the exact look that we're trying to go for.
However, it is a fantastic base to start off with. The movie also has other screen shots. So here's another very viable piece that also give me more Information on how I should be coloring all of my pieces.
So we're just all gonna keep this for good reference stick. In fact, what i'd like to do is try to keep it at the very Top, put them into a group, called references.

The first thing that I'm going to do is I ask myself, what color overall are these references that I'm trying to base my own piece off of?
Hopefully you say that they're colored a little bit green and the colors a little bit towards like dark grey kind of feeling. If so, you are correct. Fantastic. Have a cookie.
The first thing I'm gonna do for myself is I'm just going to go in color pick and find out that yes, it is exactly in the dark gray area right here.

First thing I'm gonna do is cross my piece just so that I get rid of all the extra baggage.
And this way, it will also make my piece a little bit lighter. So photoshop doesn't have to choke on every single new layer that I add on to it.
Once you start photographing some really big pieces, if your photoshop is not very strong, or if your computer isn't very strong, then it will definitely start chugging. And it will definitely start wheezing, my old computer would rise 24/7. I had to get a completely new one, just because of it. Because photoshop is such a RAM heavy program.
So I here place my two references. Now I know exactly what I'm going for. This looks really familiar to our cinema demo, right? I'm telling you, man, every thing layers on Top of each other. The lessons that we learned, the first like three videos will be the main lessons that will literally repeat themselves over the course, because that is the secret to foolproof concept painting.

Get the basic idea down and you can repeat it over and over. see, it is more and more like the recipe for a pizza. anyways. So taking my color picker, color picking it and I'm just gonna ever so quickly get rid of my darks. So here we are.
Now I just have my light and don't forget we have a lighten layer on Top of our lights and I'm just going to put it onto a clipping mask super quickly, so that it doesn't affect the dark background.

So I have my lights and what I'm going to do now, is add a new layer above my lights right here, set it to multiply.

And we're going to do the exact same thing that the movies have done to their pieces.
Placing a color filter. We take our bucket tool like this.
We put on a filter already almost instantly. It gets us so much closer to the color of this screen shot right here. But obviously it's not perfect. Ours took us a little bit too dark.

So what we're gonna do is we're gonna go here, cut out a little piece just for ourselves. Drag it down and just see how we can adjust our color.
So it can be a little bit more similar to that. Got a piece brightness changed by multiply layer just a tad brighter.
That means I'm in the right place, turn it back into color.
Now I suddenly color balance, adjust it, and you don't need to worry about, it being too close to the movie,
because at the very end of the day, you are still going to adjust it for your own taste. So right now we're just trying to get as close to the movie as possible to emulate that film Look. and once we've got there, then we'll be able to take photoshop adjustments and make our own adjustments to make it feel, how we want it to feel, different from the movie for sure. All right.
And now my color of snow. So the overall color is pretty much exactly the same as this movie screen shot here.
So I'm just going to cut out this piece. I don't need this piece anymore.

And when I turn on my darks, you can see that this is looking pretty solid. already. I didn't even do that much at all To be quite honest already. It's starting to feel as if it's a movie like, but now we need to take it to obviously the next few steps.
This is not something that we can turn in just yet. I'm gonna look at this screen shot here. I'm going to ask myself about the shadow.
And you'll notice that there are very few shadows actually, in this screen shot.
So I have to kind of make do and figure it out myself. First of all, I see the foreground here is very dark colored.
And it's kind of this shade. So I'm just going to take it and check it out. It isn't this kind of color, which means that a good rule of thumb, is that my rocks and my foreground should also be similar to this kind of color.
So with my darks, I'm gonna do something a little bit different from my lights. I'm gonna go inside my dark, because you see the reason is because where my darks actually lie. All depend on my layer clipping mask.

So everything that I have in my dark needs to be underneath this clipping mask.
So I go to my levels, and I'm just going to make it ever so slightly less dark.
Because when we add on that multiply layer is going to make everything darker.

So we want to make sure that we adjust for that. I go above it. Actually i’m going to go right below it. So right below, change it to multiply and using the same color that I did to color the overall snow.
because there I'm assuming they used probably the same exact filter, soon drop of color.

You will notice immediately that the hue of the snow has shifted.
So let me turn this on. You see, it shifted a lot closer to my color swatch.
So with this off, the snow is too warm. with this on, the snow is just right.

This is exactly what I'm trying to get. So I don't need this anymore. I'm going to get rid of this. loop. It is gone, it has been banished.
The next thing I'm going to look at is this sky specifically.
Now I don't want the sky from this image. It's way too cloudy. I want the sky from this screen shot. And the only place that we can see the sky is in this tiny little section right there.
But that's enough for me to be able to steal a little swatch. So drag it out. So I realized that the sky is a warmer color than everything else,

Which means if I go to my sky, so I go to my lights, underneath here. And I can see my sky right there.
I can adjust my sky easily. Brightness, brightness, brightness, just like that.
i do my color balance, Now my sky is looking good.

A little bit better. Not perfect, not yet. But it's looking a little better. I'm starting to feel really good about this piece. I don't know about you. So now that overall our colors have been fixated, we're going to go in and do some specific touch UPS.
And I'm gonna show you exactly what I mean. The first thing is my mountains still aren't the color that I want them to be.
This is the part where we have to go in and paint on Top.
I'm going to do a new layer, right here above everything else, and I'm going to set it to lighten.
And now if you remember, the entire point of the lighten layer is to make things lighter.
It can't make things darker. It can only make things lighter. I'm going to go into these mountains and I'm going to color pick out some of there's snow and just lightly brush on Top.
And you can see that immediately. It gives me this atmospheric look to it.
Now, first of all, you'll notice that, oh, no, I am starting to draw off the page, going into the black, right here. That's not good. So I'm going to put all of these together into one group. call the group little red, So this is my actual image, as you can see, is hiding my beautiful sketch. My actual image, here is my lighten layer, do a simple clipping masks.
And now whatever I draw lighten and we won't be able to go above it. Perfect.
So I'm gonna go and I'm gonna lightly brush these mountains and don't worry about going really light on these,

because they're supposed to be really atmospheric. They're supposed to feel far away.
So brushing this in, and making those things lighter, is not going to ruin your piece.
Trust me, it's the only way to make your piece better. I like to add a little bit of extra atmosphere by having one sided feel like it's a little bit lighter on the other side. So it gives this effect of cascading mountains.

Now I'm gonna do the same thing with these mountains here. But you'll notice one thing is that well, my house and everything else is in the way. I don't wanna touch. Because if I paint here, then it's gonna paint my house. And that's not good.
But do not worry. for I have a brilliant plan. You're gonna go into your layers. So here. you’re gonna go find your house. So here's my house. You're gonna select all the components of your house by control selecting and then shift, selecting everything else that belongs to your house.
So I got my two trees. And then I'm gonna grab this little border right here at the back trees. Now you have selected this area out. What are you going to do next quickly get this little slice into, CTRL shift I. now it has completely inverted your selection.
So you will now only draw in the opposite of what you selected, which means I can now attack the mountains in the back, without having to worry about my house at all. That is so convenient.

So I'm just gonna go in and make these mountains a lot lighter.
Now my mountains really fade into the back. There are some really nice mist going on.
Yeah. Looks like the snow is almost kind of just drifting off. I love that kind of feeling. Now i'll notice that the back of my trees, these back trees here, they are too dark. So I'm gonna go to my back trees. I’m gonna select them.
And you can see that it's a really large portion as well. But that's okay. I'll just be really careful going to deselect my tree one, tree two. My houses. so now it is a much more clean cut. I won't be able to worry about touching anything else.
Go back to my lighten layer, all the way to purify his name lighten and I'm gonna color it lighter.
And for anyone that's interested, I'm only using the soft brown pressure opacity brush.
I'm not really using anything else because this is a photo realistic stuff. And they, if you put a brush texture, does not usually feel real in my experience.
So I just stick with hard round brushes. you can see that these trees don't really fall into line.
So I'm just gonna use a lighten brush to gently blend them in, almost as if imagine you're doing your eye shadow makeup and your blending out your eye shadow.

The right side is looking Ok. But the left side is still looking way too dark.
All right, sweet. Now the back is feeling much better. So I basically do this on layer on layer on layer, starting from the very back and going to the front.
Because now you'll see that these rocks right here, they're a little bit too dark.
So if I turn this into black and white, you can see that the value of these rocks are the same value as a rocks down here, which is not a good thing because we want these to feel like they are further back.
And to make things feel like they are further back. We have to make them lighter.

Therefore I'm gonna go with my lighten layer and to several portions of this piece actually.
And I'm just going to make things lighter, so that I can push the stuff in the back that's back and bring this up to the front at the front.
