在设计研究中，潘航首次在发表的论文中创建了“Graphic Landscaping”的术语来指代一个新兴的跨学科设计研究领域。它有助于重新识别平面设计研究在多元文化社会和城市环境中的作用，以及和重新定位平面设计研究如何应对全球化发展下城市面临的文化多样性的挑战。Graphic Landscaping的跨学科研究融合了设计研究和符号学研究领域中关于视觉语言如何生成意义、价值和信念，以及这些出现在城市中的视觉符号如何与不同文化背景之间的群组产生交流和互动，以帮助定位城市的身份和场所营造的意义。潘航将Graphic landscaping的概念、理论和框架内容分别展示在了她参与过的英国和欧盟的学术会议、大学讲座和研讨会上。
此次讲座的主要内容是探讨社会符号学理论如何应用在视觉传达设计上，以包装设计为例。讲座的内容主要涵盖了两个主题：
1.符号学的主要理论介绍
2.符号学的研究发展是如何与平面设计学科产生联系的，以及其对包装设计实践的影响。
