A gift exchange between a mother and daughter is at the center of “Sweet,” the fourth single from Porridge Radio’s upcoming second album Every Bad. The gift is small—a light-up novelty pen—and the transaction is awkward. “And are you still so depressed?” the mother asks after explaining how the pen works, exercising dominion over a toy if she can’t do the same for her child. Porridge Radio, founded in Brighton in 2015 and helmed by singer-guitarist Dana Margolin, casts the slipperiness of self-formation in stark light, and wavers between pop and punk influences. Their songs are confessional, but without the meandering of a diary entry, made up of focused phrases rather than cluttered explanations.

On the band’s previous single “Lilac,” Margolin chants “I’m kind, I’m kind, I’m kind,” in an attempt to locate goodness within herself. She’s still trying to manifest virtue on “Sweet.” “I am charming, I am sweet, and she will love me when she meets me,” she sings, with the desperate intensity of someone speaking her desires out loud in order to tether them to something real. It’s as if she were alone in her room and staring into a mirror, wishing she could put on qualities like charm and sweetness as easily as a necklace or a ring. Simple two-note guitar plucking alternates with roaring riffs, just as Margolin’s circular lyrics slip between doubt and affirmation. With its blunt treatment of self-loathing and the stumbling project of overcoming it, “Sweet” sounds like someone screaming herself into existence.
