According to botanical lore, the violet was nicknamed the “Flower of Modesty”because it hides its delicate petals close to the ground beneath the heart-shaped leaves. In ancient Greek mythology, the flower symbolized the modesty of Artemis and the loyalty of her companions. The violet was often used in religious art to signify humility and purity. The violet is said to have blossomed when the archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear the son of God. Popular during the Renaissance and Victorian periods, the violet has always had positive associations with charming shyness and demure modesty.
