Symbolism: Delicate, Fleeting Beauty
“When life is not coming up roses, look to the weeds and find the beauty hidden within them.”
—— L.F. Young
Members of the hibiscus family, mallow plants were greatly valued for their medicinal, healing properties by Ancient Romans, Arabic physicians, and Chinese herbalists. Pliny said: “Whosoever shall take a spoonful of the Mallows shall that day be free from all diseases that may come to him.” In North America, Venice mallow is such a ubiquitous wildflower that it is considered by some to be an invasive weed. Yet its beauty nonetheless captivates with its shimmery purple eye in the center of its translucent ivory petals. The luminous flower only blooms for an hour each day, thus it is also known as the “flower-of-the-hour.” To the Victorians, the Venice mallow signified “delicate, fleeting beauty”.
