Several cities in China have welcomed students back to school. Students in the final year of senior and junior high schools in Shanghai, as well as in Guangdong province's Guangzhou and Shenzhen, resumed classes on campus on Monday, according to their governments.

According to Beijing's education authority, almost 50,000 students in their final year of senior high school returned to class on Monday.
These students will participate in the college entrance examination, which is scheduled to be held from July 7 to 10 in Beijing.
Those in their final year at junior high school in Beijing are scheduled to return to school on May 11.

Schools mandated that students and teachers must have their temperatures checked and hands sanitized upon arrival. Each person must also wear a mask throughout the day, except during mealtimes.
The estimated intensive classes resumption in May will be a big test for education authorities, said Wang Dengfeng, director of the MOE leading group office on the COVID-19 response.

Ensuring safety should be the prerequisite for classes resumption across China as the COVID-19 epidemic situation has been eased, Wang said in a recent interview.
Wang underscored that schools are allowed to resume operation only when the epidemic is basically controlled and the epidemic prevention measures are adopted to protect the health of teachers and students on campus.

The MOE also required schools to roll out contingency plans to cope with the risk of virus transmission before resuming classes, Wang said, noting that some schools are devising emergency response plans, demanding special vehicles to transfer people with symptoms including fever and cough or confirmed COVID-19 cases to hospitals.
