8. Visualizing Your Story---3-5.Color Variation
P90 - 00:01
I spend another 20 minutes of this painting can kind of introducing some stuff and a bit nicer. but now I want to show you something that I call like color variation of optical illusion.
for example, basically what we will be doing, we will be adding complementary colors.
And as you can see, this scene is pretty like the balance between warm and cool color.
So I will create a new layer and put it on overly.
and then pick like a very complementary color to this blue color.
It could be very saturated. So basically what I will be doing, I will be painting like in some especially on the ages, to give a little bit of life.
it's always good to have those color variation. And that's something you would never have in photos, because like camera doesn't understand how to introduce this color variations.
And we use the paint as we have full freedom to do that. just a little bit here and there. It’s almost like imagine if you were doing this in traditional media, you will do another painting.
It just gives much more depth kind of life to you to the stuff you do, like what you see over here on and off. It just gives you this additional kind of impressionistic failed it.
Try not to overuse it. Like I will paint it. And most probably many as I do in many cases, I will tone it down. But for now I'm just enjoying it. Do the same with the grass, here and there.
Just a little touch. Also we can introduce a little bit of that color variation over here as well.
you see a little bit additional level of mood. Because you can some different colors.
and then you can tone it back.
A new photo to back it up. So let's talk about colour variation and sometimes it's cold, like optical illusion.
And also when you're doing it, make sure that you're using a brush that doesn't have like using this one is not a good way to do it.
because it doesn't have any pores in it. So probably you should use something that has a little bit of pores. So you kind of bleeding the color that is underneath through your gaps your brushes that's what creates this nice optical illusion.
That’s what makes the stuff much more beautiful. Let me just turn off these three layers. Just wondering.

And you will see how much depth we have in terms of distance.

8. Visualizing Your Story---4-1.Final Demonstration
P91 - 00:00
Let me do a longer demo for you. And basically what we did in a previous demo, I set up myself a very strict limit like 30 minutes. And I had to kneel down and everything in 30 minutes. But in this one, I'm just taking my time, because I want this one to be a bit more finalized and a bit more a kind of specific in terms of what I want.
So basically, this is the story of two guys walking and trying to find something.
Some like a mysterious place on the horizon and stuff like that.
for this specific set, like I used a very good base and remember what I told you, it is very important to start from a solid base. It doesn't necessarily need to be a reference that you strangely painting on Top of it.
But at least something that will give you a very nice idea.

you would ask me if I do start from the reference all the time. Not really like.
or I do have a very good sense of photorealism know like that's why I don't need a reference. But in terms of saving your time and saving my time as well. When I'm doing those stories, whenever I have, I need to start from it reference to save my time. I always did because it's the thing that allows me to kind of cut a lot of corners and to get where I want much faster.
So for example, this one like I'm experimenting with these two moods and it literally takes me so less time to make choices and that's why having a solid reference, a base material that you need to start from is very important.
And also by saying that, don't forget that all these studies, they started from a very simple abstract composition, just as we did on second week two.

So probably some of you will struggle like starting from a photo straight away. And it’s very normal because you shouldn't be like progressing like that. you can sit down and like spend 2 hours of further bashing. But sometimes like 10 minutes of a proper drawing and painting, like making black and white composition is much more powerful because once you do that, you already know what's your arrangement inside the frame.
So you don't spend too much time moving things around and trying to find a composition that you like.
And just remember that example that I gave you. But when we started, I told you that when you have like two balls to juggle with, it's so easy. Anyone can do it. Like if it's a black and white sketch, it's very easy to kind of create the nice composition.
But once you put a few more balls, it gets more and more difficult than you need like a proper training to juggle those.

So same with the art. when you're doing starting from photo bashing and you have a lot of like Information already. It's so difficult to manipulate. And to rearrange to change stuff and stuff like that.
So be careful about that by using start from a solid reference. I mean you need something that will save you time.
like in this particular case, I already had my sketches prepared. And I was looking for a picture that will help me to nail the story.
And instead of what's going on first trying to find a cool picture and paint on top of it. I always do those black and white sketches and find something interesting.
And then I start from there. So as you can see right now what I'm doing, I'm trying to stylize this picture. And that's another very cool thing to do.

because what do you have photo. Instead of just trying to reuse whatever you see in the photo, you introducing the owner artistic view, right?
And now basically what I'm doing here. I'm taking part of the picture and kind of stretching them. Moving them around. Like trying to find a good stylization especially remember when we did our graphic design course, we would constantly talk about contrast and read and all that stuff.
So and as a painter, we have all the freedom to alternate reality to get a little bit more Interesting. make it like more contrasty.
And like for example in these trees, what I basically did I cut out like the branches and I stretched them. So because by doing that I was kind of introducing more of rich picture, everything was lights were like more strange that I just introduced a lot more vertical, which is kind of a part of the storytelling.
because you see this forest that they are kind of coming out of the forest all like you're walking on fully like very tall vertical.
So that's why feel Free to kind of alter and something that I often do. And I believe in the end of this demo, I would also do it. I would like to select the part of the picture and just stretch it. because stretching all these reinforces the perspective and just makes everything much stronger.
So now I'm busy with integrating characters. I did a small touch up and at this stage I also started introducing a little bit of small touches, I introduce start a little bit fog.
because that's what we use all the time in scene in movies. You know they have a lot of fog, they even have a fog machine on the side which generate the fog.
because fog is the best tool to separate your middle ground background and foreground.
it just gives much more depth. Like if there was no focus, it's like quite flat. keep painting the fog which is a very good tool to kind of break up the depth of your picture. And I'm not very fanatical about like selecting everything properly.
like separating. We are not doing math painting, and sometimes like people picking up my files complaint, all your files are too messy and stuff like that. I say, yeah, because I don't wanna spend time. And especially of course, if you're working in a team, we need to consider the fact that someone will pick it up after you. But if you're doing something by your own, and you definitely know that nobody is going to pick up your file, do any kind of stuff on top of it. So I prefer not to spend too much time naming my layers and putting them into groups and stuff like that.

it depends on what kind of person you are. My goal is to deliver stuff very quickly. So I don't really bother having anything organized. And also when it comes to like selections.
All of my selections are mostly done by hand. I’m not very careful about selecting age trees separating even, coming from my experience. I just found that in 90% of the time, I never used those layers that I tried to keep, just in case.
we all have this feeling, like or maybe do. They're gonna ask for some change and I need to move things around. Never actually move them. So I thought why bother I will just do everything very roughly.
And if I need to separate something, I can redo in the end at all last time,
also right now. I'm kind of stylized this guy a little bit. So I keep using this word stylizing. And make sure that when you’re doing this, you’re doing at not because it looks cool but because remember the main reason why we are stylizing its simplification, because the simpler our painting is like the most stylize. It becomes the less balance we have to juggle. we don't have the hyper realism to achieve any more.
And all we need to do is kind of jump around and introduce like more and more stylization which gives us a lot of freedom.
and we will be able to make creative design choice is much faster because of the picture is more stylized.
So that's why the reason why I’m a gamble that I did on painting. And I'm I kept saying that there is this term of beautiful brush strokes, people like putting brush stroke everywhere. But it's not about putting brush strokes. It's about simplifying and stylizing.
And you really need to understand where are you putting those brush tool where you need seem to be simple. way need things to be a little bit more complicated. that's why we do it.
like for the camera can not put like soft edges and smudge here and there.
And everything is in general crease price. You can use that depth that field, but when it comes to painting why it's very powerful and you decide where you want people to look at, you decide where you need to smudge and you decide where you need to create like artificial out of focus.
So that's why I like introducing like mixer brush smudge here and there.
because I want to have full control over what I'm doing. Right now you can see like I'm introducing those little gaps in the trees. So but when I'm doing this, I'm squinting my eyes and I'm trying to kind of break up the forms to introduce more depth,
more forms more layers as we go away from the camera, Also like you will see me doing this a lot. I kind of random of the paint brush strokes. And then to have this kind of direction in the sky in the trees and whatever. It's just like because as a painter, what you can do that the filter camera doesn't understand warm or like it just gives you what you see like what it says, you as an artist, you can decide, I need to add a little bit reinforcing lines over here.

Like for example, if the cloud is flat, it just put like a a few brush strokes to give it that way. You can see me doing it on the tree. like I'm just putting few strokes that kind of reinforced bar texture.
And I often do it like in the sky in the ground and the characters or any kind of form, remember in the very first lesson I showed you how important it is to form, you need to follow the form to reinforced kind of sense of something going away from us are going towards us all being like a cylindrical form.
I think that's kind of happy with the background. And now I think it's time to jump and do some stuff with with characters as well.
And for example, the characters, it’s always in the timeline. And what right, should I use photos should I use 3D? should I paint?
And for example, this one main characters are very silhouette to that, And I just save them from behind and I'm not the kind of exploring the characters.
So why should I go with like build 3D or like try to paint them? Because there is no point for me to do that. So I found a good reference that I already have everything that I need. It has a nice pose. It has a nice like gesture and stuff.
But of course I will be improving all that stuff as I go. But overall, It was a very solid base already. And whatever you like, in my career. So many times people would say, tell me like, oh, man, you just found a very good reference and copy pasted it. I would say, yeah, that's the whole point. I won't concentrate on my story like using these methods in a day. I can create probably four pictures.
If I spend half an hour, then I can probably do eight of those.
So and like this one, it was a long one. So probably I can do this type of paintings like two of them, like, because I'm using all of those shortcuts that allow me to spend less time on anatomy of the horse anatomy of the human.
I spent most of my time assembling the final picture. And the final pitch is something that my art director or director sees. So. it's basically. again, I'm trying to communicate an idea. You should use any methods. You won't to achieve your goal, which is your story. But by saying that, don't forget it. It’s also very important that you really understand what you're doing. And like just as in the case with photo bash, instead of starting closer photo bashing and always relying on photo, you need to have a skill to actually to start from scratch. to do your composition black and white comes to decide what's your story about. And then look for the photo.
So it's all about balance. And I think people are always like not complaining, but they're not comfortable. Be seeing somebody doing something very fast. And they generate a lot of excuses. Like, you're using too much photo bashing or you use this. But. And in some cases, it's true.
I know people who can do an amazing photo bashing, but they're not very good painters, but if they are good designers and storytellers, it really doesn't matter. like, remember when we did our painting course. I think I kept saying that I really don't want you to be an amazing painter.
I want you to be a good storyteller. So if you kind of struggling with doing stuff in the painter that way, maybe you should be doing like more photo real more 3D stuff, it all depends on you. I just think that it’s very important to have this balance.
When I was trying to learn, I was trying to improve my skills. I would try all different methods and see which ever method fits me.
So that's why this course I tried to overuse the wide variety, a wide range of different tools that we need a little bit 3D, we did like photos, we did with sketching, we did things like movie and all that stuff.
And I hope you will be using those, you will be finding your own way of doing things. And even my students, I can see it as the grow they recognize okay, this method fits me, or maybe not this one.
So that was the main goal of this course to get you comfortable with the tool that you think is the tool you should be using. not the tool that all other people tell you to use because tools are always told. There are so many of them. Tomorrow there will be like another tool. tomorrow we will be doing stuff in, let's say if they are right, so we will not be painting on the canvas, but what's important is that you enjoy your process and you have full control over what you do.

8. Visualizing Your Story---4-1.Final Demonstration
P91 - 17:09
like for example, why I like 3D in photoshop, like people would say, okay, you can do much more complicated stuff and other stuff. That’s true. But in photoshop, it's very simple. I have a lot of control over what I'm doing.
So for example, if I am extremely ashamed, I can exclude it and still have a source that will kind of dictate what my final design should look like.
So that's very important. This is something that you don't have another software in order like in 3D software to change your design, you need to re sculpt it or redo it right.
So that's why I like photoshop 3D. It's very simple and offers you a lot of control over what you do.
And coming to story telling. To be honest, like whenever people ask me what type of way rules you for what you're doing your story telling.
And I already shared with you a lot in terms of camera angles. And I'm looking for a camera angle that will tell my story and stuff like that.
And as a basic principle of storytelling, I use only one rule that there was a time I was I'm still very interested in movie making. And I was reading a lot of books and stuff like that.
And that was a really nice book with a very good example of that how you need to create like attention inside your story or anything you do visually, And basically the concept was called a Pandora box.
And what is the Pandora box concept saying is that in the movie that should be the moment when the character whoever protect this that he opened this box and everything changes.
So Imagine like it could be a physical box. For example. You come home and there is a delivery at your door.
And there is like a gun inside the box. What would you do? like now It became like it was an ordinary day feel coming back home.
And now you're having the box open and there is a gun inside. It's like your whole life changes.
Like there are so many ways you can it can go from there. Like for example. the first choice you could probably go to police. But whoever left the gun or even the police, they will question you would like why was it your door?
Or maybe someone was watching you picking up and you will get in trouble or you can hide it.
And once again, it's like hiding in gun at home. And at home is a is not a good thing. And this is how you create the attention.
imagine you mentioned you when you decided to have to hide the gun, You come in the room. come inside. And then your bell rings.
Like Is it the police? Is it like the bad guys?
So it's this concept of open the door of Pandora boxes. You can apply it straight to your paintings as well,
For example, instead of like having an ordinary something like that's why I’m doing my paintings and i’m trying to find my stories. And I keep trying to find this really interesting twists at some point.
Trying to do something that I normally wouldn't do. And that always helps me to quit this route interest.
You know what? People see my stuff. They say, oh, that's cool. That’s something I haven’t seen that before.
like I’m doing something BNW series like being car like Icelandic of landscape. I just took some unreleased subject and mix them together.
I had in mind a story like. I have this idea of like to tribes. And they were trying to compete with each other. And there was something that has BMW cars.
So originally like the stories you would see the tribal only you would say, okay, that's an ordinary tribe.
But then they would two BW car. Suddenly you will feel like what? So from there the story changes. Like what. What is a story about why those cars or it could be a nice commercial. Could be BNW.
What I’m working when I’m doing some concepts work. i always try to find some some kind of interesting thing, by saying that you’ve thinking like. That's really cool that we will keep your interest. So that's the main concept that I’m using.
here’s storyteller. I'm trying to find the adorable that have open, it will create an interest. it's like the story in my mind. like the person is looking for something air. kind spaceship for example. like something from the future. Like something growing like that. So that’s the basically where they’re walking towards the figure the background. It actually can be like a huge giant like fuse sphere in area. that's what creates the factor of adorable.
you imagine it being like, it's a sunset or it’s a sun behind the clouds.
But actually when you come in and you reveal what it is then you start to create an interest. Like people will question like, question themselves. Why what is this sphere is about it then you want to see that how this story goes on. you wanna see what's next.
It’s very simple concept, but it always helps you to create interesting stories. Like, for example, if you’re doing an astronaut story.
Instead of having like a regular astronaut, like what I did in the lesson one like basic at the source of always climbing up the mountains.
then you would for the first time you see him climbing, he would go, i've never seen astronaut climbing anywhere. So where is he going? You have a lot of these questions that pop up in your head that you kind of interested in finding out.
What's this about? So once again, that's probably the only one principle that I'm using as a story of telling what we know you can recognize, If you watch any of those movies that you like, you will have exactly the same moment or something happens that is happening at your story, like the situation you are in completely changes.
Like if you remember the movie called sliding doors, there will be like this Pandora box moment when she is running towards other train on the tube. the doors just closed in front of them.
And there was an alternate version where she managed getting in and she did not find that her boyfriend was cheating on her.
But just like in the first case, when the doors were closed in front of him, she went back home and she found her boyfriend cheating.
So that concept, you can see everywhere. Like every successful movie that if you kind of analyze it,
you will find that a Pandora box concept, where you at this moment, that will completely change your story.
Like for example, the movie limitless, the homeless guy, the writer who is struggling in his life.
It was just another bad day in his life. And he was walking on his street and he met an old friend of him and the guy offered him like the pill.
And he didn't know what the pill is about. And once he took the pill, that's what changed everything.
And that's what made that movie very interesting. Because you were like, oh my god, that pill enhances the brain capacity. So what's next?
So remember when we started this course, I told you that my ultimate goal is to summarize everything like to quit the very saturated knowledge for instead of like bothering you with tons of meaningless like a story telling in terms of composition term I just summarized everything clicked as a composition I just took from three or four frames that I’m using.
This is basically what I'm using on the daily bases. this is what everyday I’m having those in mind and building everything around it.
So that's why I tried to summarize everything as much as possible for you and what is left you guys.
Even if this causes is ending, I would strongly advise you to carry on experimenting and carry on creating your stories like give yourself like assignments, like maybe a story in a month.
So I'm actually pretty organized when it comes to do your projects. because remember, as I said, everyone has ideas, but unless you put your ideas on the canvas, ideas on computer.
So what I constantly used to do, I would sit down and decide, I'm gonna do a story about the second world war. And then I would give myself a very strict deadline.
