Following the end of free movement, European Economic Area nationals must apply for a work visa in order to take up a job in Britain. But not all of them pay the same.

Employers also save money when recruiting from these countries, as companies are not asked to pay the £199 fee needed to issue a certificate of sponsorship to hire them.

Irish citizens do not need work visas because of the Common Travel Area with the U.K., but five EU countries are not eligible for reduced fees: Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia.

The British government argues its eligibility list is based on the signatories of the Council of Europe’s Social Charter (CESC), an international treaty dating back to 1961 adopted by 26 countries including the U.K.

The diplomats also counter that all five EU countries not currently eligible for reduced fees ratified a revised charter at the turn of the century, which also includes the obligation to cut or abolish visa fees. “These are two instruments with basically the same aim that exist in parallel,” the first diplomat said.

The EU envoys are piling pressure on the Commission, saying this is the first example of the U.K.’s post-Brexit immigration rules treating EU nationals differently on the basis of their nationality. They warned post-Brexit Britain is likely to discriminate between EU citizens in other looming mobility decisions, for instance, when it decides whichcountries can participate in its Youth Mobility scheme — currently open to nine developed economies outside the bloc.

A spokesperson for the Commission said that while the EU and the U.K. are free to determine their respective visa policies, “the U.K. has committed in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement to treat all nationals of EU Member States equally for the purposes for the purposes of short-term visas” and “cannot decide to grant a visa waiver for short-term travel to citizens of certain Member States, whilst excluding others.”

Can the EU even do something about it? I mean I know there is supposed visa reciprocity in EU rules, and the deals should cover ALL countries, but I'm not sure this goes as far as fees, and also even when it comes to just visas, the EU can't do much, like people from Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia still need US visas...

I know the Germans have the same problem. But they allow dual citizenship if it means hardship. Just state your case I the Dutch embassy and ask if it's possible to get an exception in some way.
It's hard but I don't think it's impossible. Especially in the current political clima.

What are you on about? This has nothing to do with refugees. Moroccan citizens in the Netherlands aren’t refugees, their parents or grand parents were invited as guest labourers after the second world war to rebuild the country. Again, NOTHING to do with refugees.
Also has nothing to do with Western Europe. Moroccan citizens everywhere in the world can’t give up their Moroccan passports. A Moroccan citizen with dual nationality in the US or in Australia or wherever also is forced to keep their Moroccan citizenship.

I guess people can vote in two places. Say Poland has problems with old Polish immigration from the 70s and 80s voting, usually far right and ultra catholic and they still vote, despite not being in Poland for decades and thinking it still looks like in the communist days. Someone who hasn't been living in a country for so many years deciding it's fate has little to do with democracy. Not sure this was his/her point, but it pisses me off.

I mean there are tons of countries that have large diasporas (Ireland and Israel are the first two that come to mind) that require anyone who wants to vote in national elections to actually be in the country to vote. This sort of removes that problem, since most people wouldn’t take the effort of flying all the way back home just to vote, especially if they have been living abroad for decades.

I don't know, probably for the same reason that we give preference to some non EU countries over others. Maybe there is more demand from these countries and they're trying to manage that? I'm not a politician so you would really have to ask someone from the UK government.
If the EU wanted to do something about this then they could subsidise the payments.

I don't think that we have anything to gain from victimising the UK as it is becoming increasingly difficult to argue that the EU is acting in good faith. The easiest way to resolve this would be for the EC to pay the €55 on behalf of those states.
I could be wrong but I think within the UK people offer distinctions between English/Scottish/Welsh and Northern Irish, internationally these classifications do not exist and instead it's British.

Depends very much on where you live. London, obviously, plus Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Bristol. Otherwise I'd say it's pretty comparable with most of western Europe. Food and drink is cheap (unless you shop at Waitrose of course).

These policies are not really discrimination, after all, a country doesn't have the same geopolitical agreements with every other country. They make some special agreements with some, and not for others. It really depends on the interests of the nation. There are countries now that limit Chinese investment because they don't want to end up like certain African nations. Every country already decides which country requires a visa and which doesn't, this is nothing new.
