TCL is primarily known as a company that builds cheap TVs, but it has also been building smartphones for awhile now. After Blackberry quit the smartphone market in 2016, TCL licensed the brand and started pumping out QWERTY-equipped Android phones. It licenses the Alcatel brand from Nokia and builds cheaper slab phones. It bought the Palm trademark from HP and produced the microscopic "Palm Palm" smartphone. Starting now, though, TCL is actually going to put its own name on the smartphones it makes, and the first is this set of three devices that all cost under $500.

Yeah, the "TCL 10 5G" is faster and cheaper than the TCL 10 Pro. The display is a 6.53-inch 2340×1080 LCD—in some ways this is a downgrade, since you''''re going from OLED to LCD, but it could also be considered an upgrade in that it''''s not a pointless, glare-inducing curved display. There''''s a rear fingerprint reader now instead of an in-screen reader, and a hole punch camera instead of a notch. Other than that, there are still four rear cameras, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 4500mAh battery. I think the trick here with the wonky differentiation is that this phone is not getting the wide distribution of the other two. TCL says this device is coming to "sext regions around the world later this year for €399/£399." The lack of a Freedom Bucks price might suggest that America is not one of these sext regions, but TCL told 9to5Google that a "major US carrier" will pick up the phone sometime this year.

This is an interesting take. They aren''''t going on a "flagship killer" route, so quote a certain company. But outside of sheer processing speed, many of these specs do go right up against flagships and the handsets directly below the flagships.

The built in Roku on a TCL TV certainly does have ads if you leave it enabled, but they are the same as a standalone Roku box.

The price points are great. The features sound more than sufficient for MY needs, at least. If that''''s a 64 MP camera on the back of the $250 version, everything else is moot, IMHO. That''''s a shit-ton of camera for a tiny price. If it does a good job making and receiving calls, it sounds like a whole lot better of a phone than what I currently have and within my price range.
But, yes, I''''ll wait for the reviews. I do like that companies are beginning to focus on the "also ran" markets for the masses. They look pretty solid for the money and the only thing I''''d want would be some degree of waterproofing just for peace of mind. Wireless charging would be good to but it''''s not exactly a showstopper and I''''m not sure how many competing phones have it at this price point.

The first 2 panels were bad & TCL sent a tech over & replaced the tv right away

Super cheap, good enough for my kid to play xbox on, and 4K HDR at half the price that LG/Samsung wants for their low end models. really can''''t complain. I actually need to pick up an android phone for work at some point, looks like I may go this route since I can keep it under 500 bucks and still get modern features

These look great for the price, but I''''m rather saddened that you have to downgrade to an LCD to get the rear fingerprint reader.
The big hangups are going to be whatever skin they are putting on the UI, which will probably suck or at least be completely useless bloatware, and the upxe situation. Given that Nokia''''s phones are great, in the same price range, and they participate in the Android One program, they are probably still going to be the ones to beat in the mid- to low-range.
