A 3D reconstruction showing the foreign body response (FBR) in a living mouse just two weeks after polycaprolactone implantation. FBR can cause implanted devices to malfunction. Parlani et al. reveal that fibroblast recruitment in the FBR is a conserved, self-organizing process partially independent of macrophages. The vibrant images could offer deeper insight on the role fibroblasts play in the FBR to implanted medical devices.

For flying insects like Drosophila, maintaining aerial stability is a constant balancing act that requires active feedback control. Using a combination of targeted neural manipulations and quantitative behavioral measurements in freely flying Drosophila, Whitehead et al. identified key roles for two prominent wing steering muscles that fruit flies use to actuate these control reflexes. The authors found that silencing each of these wing motor units led to distinct pathways in the flight controller circuit being “turned off.” The results point towards an organizational principle for implementing relatively simple but robust feedback control in a system combining sensors and motors.

Flow elongation strain rate of an experimental cell apparatus. Swimming microorganisms encounter a wide range of unsteady flows in natural and industrial settings which alter their transport and lead to intriguing physical phenomena. Qin et al. investigate the dispersion patterns of Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent for the highly contagious disease cholera, and reveal that chaotic transport of micro-swimmers can arise in simple unsteady flows. They hypothesize that, by careful selection and control of flow structure and pathlength, an optimal transport strategy for microbe dispersion can be devised.

A smart dual hormone microneedle patch for blood glucose control. Insulin and glucagon secreted from the pancreas are essential for regulating blood glucose levels. Inspired by the dual-responsive mechanism, Yang et al. developed a glucose-responsive microneedle patch that enables closed-loop delivery of both insulin and glucagon for diabetes treatment. In a Type 1 diabetic pig model, the patch kept blood glucose levels within normal range and minimized the risk of hypoglycemia.
