【百词斩】till/until辨析

对于中国人而言，英文真的很扯淡！发音相似、拼写相似的情况是不计其数，这云里雾里的节奏，常常把本编弄得晕头转向、摸不着头脑

这不，刚解决完before/after/since的考点，till/until又来捣乱了。今天小编我一定要拔了它们的考点，以泄心中之愤。


总的来说，till和until同义，意为“直到...时，till多用于非正式文体。

1. 与肯定句连用，表示“做某事直至某时”，动词必须是延续性的。例如：

I slept until (till) midnight.

Wait until (till) I call you.

He will remain in college until (till) he finishes his Ph.D course.

在上面三个例子中，句中的sleep, wait, remain都是延续性动作，till/until与肯定句连用。


2. 与否定句连用，表示“直至...才...”，动词是非延续性的。例如：

I won't go with you until (till) I finish my homework.

He didn't arrive until (till) half past four.

Don't stop until (till) I say so.

在上面三个例子中，句中的go, arrive, stop都是非延续性动作，till/until与否定句连用。


3. Not until 位于句首，主句要部分倒装！！！例如：

Not until 4:00 in the morning can he fall asleep.
=He can’t fall asleep until 4:00 in the morning.

Not until he returned did we have supper.
=We didn’t have supper until he returned.

Not until I was fired did I realize how much time I had wasted.
=I didn’t realize how much time I had wasted until I was fired.


4. not until可用于强调句：It is/was not until…that…结构。

It was not until I called her from behind that she found me.

It is not until 4:00 in the morning that he can fall asleep.

It was not until I was fired that I realized how much time I had wasted.


注：until/not until置于句首、以及在强调句型中，都不能用till替换until。

Until I was 20 I had never been away from my hometown. （✔️）

Till I was 20 I had never been away from my hometown. （✖️）

It was not until 4:00 in the morning that he came back. （✔️）

It was not till 4:00 in the morning that he came back. （✖️）
