UK new car sales plunge 97% to lowest level since 1946
-British new car sales slumped by an annual 97% in April to the lowest level of any month since February 1946 as factories and dealerships shut due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Does this mean I can buy a new car supercheap soon?

VODKA_WATER_LIME
You will probably be able to get a used car at a good price soon. Lots of people won''t be able to afford their car loans.

FullPoopBucket
All the used cars (and most other things) in my area have risen in price across the board cause all the people selling are broke due to covid and trying to get more for their stuff combined with the dealerships being closed

VODKA_WATER_LIME
Just wait. There are far more cars for sale than there are buyers. Banks are going to be repossessing (and then selling) a lot of cars. Prices will fall.

No.
I worked for one of the largest dealer groups in the UK, 180 dealerships. We made on average 400 pounds on any new car. Mercedes, Audi , BMW on average LOST 500 to 2000 pounds on each new car sold.
We make profit from hitting our sales targets and the manufacturer giving us bonuses.
The only way you could get a supercheap car is if the manufacturer throws some crazy offers to the consumer.. like 0% finance, or more of a customer deposit bonus, idk...
All in all, you might see a improvement but it won''t be half off or anything like that.

Parts have 300%-1000% margin. I mean, the control arms on my car are 250 eur/arm, there''s 8 of them and they are all just basic metal parts.

Maplefrix
They make the money back on servicing cars. You want your warranty then pay the dealer regularly.

NuclearStar
From my experience having a new Toyota, they make their money by pretending to service your car. Service 3 they told me they changed the air filter and fluids, charged me extra for it, Service 4 which was literally 3 months later, told me that my air filter needs changing as it was the original one and the fluids are over a year old and are degraded......

lol.
While people are locked up at home and car show rooms are closed, shock horror, cars sales drop
Next there will be an article on how Pub beer sales have dropped 100%, their lowest level since the creation of the Irish.

shakamone
As an irish person, the struggle is real.

Maplefrix
Working from home and limited shopping meant that I spent just $14 in gas last month. I think everyone is realizing that we don''t really need cars.

Altamtblue
I spent just $14 in gas last month
I filled up on March 25.. still have 1/4 tank as of yesterday..

ledow
I filled up about the same time - still have 3/4 of a tank left. And I do still have to attend site quite a bit, because I''m classed as essential staff.
It''s not that we don''t need cars... it''s that I don''t need to BE THERE AT WORK to do the majority of my job.
If the restrictions were lifted, but work stayed so I could do it from home - my petrol usage would be 75% of normal, but I''d still get a lot of driving done. Possibly more... hell, if restrictions were lifted and I can work online, I''m driving to the coast!

Cudi_buddy
Here here. My whole job is done on the computer or meetings. And we haven''t missed a beat with any of it. I hope we can at least get a compromise. Maybe work a couple days at home each week.

ThisIsMyRental
I hope we can at least get a compromise. Maybe work a couple days at home each week.
That would be possible if we ALL started contacting our politicians to ask about instituting a PERMANENT right to work from home!

Shockingly_corrupt
The distance isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of funding and terrible urban design.
A plurality of people should be able to walk or take transit to work. The US has many more cars than people... that’s nuts.

seeasea
England''s, outside of London is pretty godawful, too. Manchester isn''t any better than Cleveland

Tiberius666
Nah, I''m from Teesside and live in Manchester now
The most common bus in Middlesbrough was the 12 from what I remember which was every 10 minutes at the most, the Trams in Manchester are often every 5 minutes at peak and the most travelled routes often have busses that come down slightly alternate routes every 3/4 minutes during peak.

FlakyFudge
You think the 12 is more common than the 36? Guess growing up in Stockton it was more familiar to me.

pandacatcat
Liverpool''s public transport is shit too.

chill6300
Tbf Public transport anywhere that isn''t in the south east in the UK is going to be a bit wank, since that is where the majority of public funds are invested.

Solar-Fury
Because public transport works better in places with a higher population density

pandacatcat
Compared to neighbouring Manchester with its metro system and the likes of the capital city and basically every city I''ve visited in Europe, it is shit. Of course it''s better then places in South America, Africa and the likes but I''m not sure that''s a bar we should really be comparing our standards to.

PowderMonkeyCharlie
Well not all of us live in inner city apartments.

ScyD
Except if you have to go farther than walking distance... Most people don''t bike or find it viable for everyday use.

youngchul
Most people in Europe have public transportation available. For shorter distances cycling is viable if you have a somewhat healthy population and the infrastructure for it.

ScyD
Yea, in the US where I am it is definitely a different story in most places. Much more distance to cover in general. Some people do bike but it''s usually recreational.

youngchul
Yes, but this is a worldnews thread about a European news story. So hence the European perspective.

ScyD
True it is. When you said "we all" I would tend to think of it as referring to all people who are in kind of this similar situation.
I''m also guessing if you asked people in the EU most would say they would not want to walk/bike everywhere if given the choice. And we can''t assume every or most things are within those distances anyway.
I think after enough time has passed, people in most places are basically going to be doing the same things, maybe with more facemasks and being wary of too much contact with people and germs.

youngchul
Yes, which is why European cities have loads of public transportation options.
As parking in the city isn’t always easy either. It’s often faster just to take the train/metro/bus than car here, because they avoid rush hour traffic. (Busses here often have separate lanes here in congested areas)

GottfreyTheLazyCat
Oh, we need cars and we will need them more over next few years, just not as often as we do now.
This quarantine is going to shake up job practices, I honestly believe within next few years most jobs will become remote jobs. That means I (and others) can move away from big cities, go into a cabine with some internet connection and work ftom there. I might be able to even afford to buy a house, as long as ot''s far away from any large city.

Stargate_1
Most jobs? That''s silly to say. Many jobs are found in trades, service sector. Also some jobs require physically being in the location just so you have access to the facilities for whatever reason. Some jobs may change to work from home, but that is not feasible for many of them.

ThisIsMyRental
If you can, you should definitely start contacting your local politicians to ask for their help in implementing the PERMANENT right to work from home! I think it would be EXCELLENT if everyone who could work from home got the permanent RIGHT to!

EunuchProgrammer
I wonder about long term implications. What happens if the schools can''t reopen? All teaching moves to online. Students learn from home and all social interaction ceases. What would years of this do to education levels? Would the kids be motivated to do schoolwork from home? And the social fallout of not being around your peers, good, bad or indifferent. How would that change society in the future? If Facebook and Reddit were my only social interactions I''d be a lot more screwed up than I am now. If you are a sociologist or psychologist and are looking for a thesis subject, you might want to take notes and record what happens. This is going to get interesting.

youngchul
You''re really overcomplicating things a bit lol.
In Denmark we have already opened up a lot again, including schools for the younger kids. All stores, barbershops, etc. are open again. Restaurants and cafés are opening up again soon as well.
Social distancing and hygiene measures can go a long distance without ruining all social life. As long as hospitals are under capacity, death rates will stay low, and life will eventually resume to normal.
