Évoquer / evoke
英语的“evoke”是不是从法语借来的呢？专家们似乎没有定论。
但“évoquer/evoke”这一对同源词肯定都来自拉丁词“evocare”，这个词是由前缀“ex-”和词根“vocem /vox”（声音）组成的——“ex + vocare”就是“召唤，引诱” （call out，lure, entice out）啦。
说来，英/法语中，凡是含有“voc /vok /voq”等构词成分的词，大都与“声音”有关——追根溯源，他们的“共同祖先”都是原始印欧语(PIE)词根“*wekw-”：“发声，说话”（give vocal utterance,speak）。同源词很多啦。例如：梵文的“vakti”（speaks, says），巴利语的“vaca”（word），希腊语的“epos”（word），英语的“vocal, voice, vocabulary, vocation, vocative，convocation, provocation”, etc.
注意：英语和法语对应的一组动词：
英语：evoke convoke invoke provoke revoke
法语：évoquer convoquer invoquer provoquer revoquer
这些词都很常用，也都与“话语”有关啦。
“Évoquer/evoke”就是用声音“叫出来，呼唤出来”，或者“唤起，勾起（回忆）”，英/法语意思差不多，常可互译：
Cette musique évoquait des souvenirs de son enfance.
This music evoked memories of his childhood.
这段音乐唤起了他对童年的回忆。
Tous ces noms évoquent la splendeur de l’époque romaine.
All these names evoke the glory of the Roman period.
这些名字让人想起罗马时代的光荣历史。（凯撒大帝？^v^）
但要注意：英语的“evoke” 的主语仅限于“非生命”的东西，如：一段旋律，一股味道，一个词等。它们会引起对往事的回忆，且常带有怀旧的色彩。（Le verb “to evoke” (=rappeler) ne s’emploie qu’avec un sujet inanimé, plus particulièrement, il s’emploie lorsqu’un air de musique, une odeur, un mot fait surgir des souvenirs, des images, souvent accompagnés d’un sentiment de nostalgie.）
学法语的都知道，在Proust的“追忆似水年华”中，正是一块“madeleine”蛋糕和一杯“椴花茶(tilleul)”的味道打开了主人公对童年记忆的闸门。（好文艺呀~~~ ^v^）
但法语的“évoquer”勾起的，不总是对往事的美好回忆啦（^v^）。被“触发，唤起”的也可以是别的东西，例如：
Cette photo ne vous évoque-t-elles rien de particulier ?
Does this picture suggest anything in particular to you /remind you of anything particular?
这张照片没让你想起什么东西来吗？ （警察常这样问吧？^v^）
Tous ces cratères dans la forêt évoquent les bombardements qui ont ravagé cette région en 1944.
All the craters in the forest make one think of /bring to mind the bombings which laid waste this area in 1944.
森林中的弹坑使人想起1944年的轰炸，当时一切都毁了。
Le rocher évoque une tête d’homme.
The rock resembles a human head /The shape of the rock suggests a human head.
这块岩石看起来象个人头。
在以上这些句子里，法语的“évoquer”就不能翻译成英语的“evoke”啦。
法语的“évoquer”也可以用人作主语，例如：
Il y avait longtemps qu’on ne s’était plus revu. On a passé la soirée à évoquer des souvenirs (les passés, nos amis disparus).
We hadn’t met for a long time and spent the evening reviving memories (recalling the past, lost friends).
久别重逢，我们整晚都在谈论往事（追忆往事，亡友）。
La catastrophe du Heysel sera certainement évoquée au conseil des ministres.
The Heysel tragedy will certainly be brought up at the Cabinet meeting.
Haysel悲剧肯定会在内阁会议上被提起。
Évoquant l’incendie, le premier ministre a déclaré que c’était la chose le plus horrible qu’il ait jamais vue.
Talking about the fire, the Prime Minister said it was the most horrible thing he had ever witnessed.
谈到这次火灾，首相说这是他见过的最恐怖的事件。
Je me contenterai d’évoquer les principaux thèmes du livre sans entrer dans les détails.
I will simply touch on /mention the main themes of the book without going into detail.
我只想谈谈这本书的主题，而不涉及其细节
除了引起“怀旧”，英语的“evoke”也可用于“引起某种情感反应”，这是对现实事物的反应，可以是正负面的，也可以是负面的，例如：
The child’s skill on the piano evoked the admiration of the audience.
Le talent de l’enfant au piano suscita l’admiration du public.
这孩子天才的钢琴技巧引起了听众的阵阵赞叹。
The headmaster’s decision to shorten the holidays evoked a storm of protest.
La décision du directeur de raccourcir les vacances suscita une vague de protestations.
校长决定缩短假期，这引发了抗议的浪潮。（^v^）
在以上这些句子里，英语的“evoke”也不能翻译成法语的“évoquer”。
