This all being said...India is a wonderful travel destination for some of the very same reasons.
India pushes your limits and changes you forever. The lack of control in India forces you to live in the moment. The lack of sanitation in some areas pushes you out of your comfort zone. The evidence of pain and suffering that you encounter there forces you to see some of the harsher realities of the world that we all share. If you are open to letting India change you, there is no end to the self development that can occur.

I backpacked India for over a month some years ago and I had a great traveling experiences. I will tell you what makes India to be an amazing travel destination.

4.Affordability
Did I say how inexpensive India is to travel? Flying into India might cost you a bit, but once you are there, many things are quite affordable. Train, bus, food, accommodations, etc. You get to travel for a while without breaking your bank.
5.Cultural diversity
India is a huge land with culture of diversity. The fact that there are various religions, ethnic groups, and multiple languages used in one country creates a quite colorful picture of the country. You will see Rajasthan is very different from Punjab. If you are looking to enter a spiritual or religious path, India will embrace you open arms with many options to choose from.
4.支付能力
我说过在印度旅行有多便宜吗?飞去印度可能会花费你一些金钱，但一旦你到了那里，许多东西都是相当便宜的。火车、公共汽车、食品、住宿等。你可以旅行好长一段时间而不怎么花钱。

These are some reasons what I think traveling India is great. It might not be for everyone. If you are looking for a place where everything to be well-organized and where you want to be left alone, India might come as a challenge. But I can assure you that India will never bore you… whether you feel comfortable with it or not.

I find India the most beautiful, awful, open-minded and conservative country I’be ever been to. In other words - India is so big and full of extremes and opposites that it would be impossible to multiply it into one single handed experience.
In so many ways, India is more of a continent than a country. In every state you will find different languages, different food, different customs.
Personally, I find South India a very nice place to visit. In my experience (as a foreigner, only practicing a bit Hindi and mostly English), people are more open-minded here. I find the people, the atmosphere and the cooking pretty amazing. As for outstanding experiences, don’t miss out on the back waters in Kerala. They are truly amazing.

That said, Mumbai is my favourite city! I love everything that place has to offer. Shopping, entertainment, restaurants, hotels - you can get everything here. The food is great, and it's easy to track down any local food you like. Goa, which belongs to the same state, is a typical beach place. I'm not a big fan - but it's to have been there and done that.
Delhi, on the other hand (let me just say I don't mean to offend anyone and my experience might be rare for all I know), I found the people rude and not friendly at all. I'm eternally thankful my ex was with me, because the way men looked at me there wasn't in any way appropriate (and I wore appropriate clothing).

Men staring is a problem all over India (the first times I visited malls or beaches I didn't feel comfortable), however Delhi was by far the worst. Unless I need to travel there for business purposes, I will never re-visit, which is sad, because the city has some beautiful cultural places and history.
Still - I would absolutely say that it's good to go there and get the experience and pulse of the place, especially if you consider visiting Agra as well. Agra, itself, isn't much to write home about, but Taj Mahalis surely amazing. So many historical places are overrated and hyped so much, but visiting Taj, was to me, an experienceI wouldn't want to be without.

It has everything you could want - mountains, deserts, jungles, beaches, architecture, city life, kind people, endless food.
Some people love to ruin the party with whatever rape statistics they can muster up. Did you know that in total count as well as per 100,000.. India ranks lower than the US. Actually as recently as 2010, the US had about 4x more rapes than India with about 25% of the population (source: Rape statistics - Wikipedia).

Crimes happen everywhere. You can get in a car crash tonight and die. Anything can happen, even in your own backyard. That’s no reason to turn your nose up at an amazing country and shut the door on incredible opportunities that await you.
Since going to India six times, I’ve encouraged so many of my friends to try. Even though only a few have gone, they’ve all loved it.

You haven’t lived until you’ve gone uphill on the side of a mountain in a crowded bus, until you’ve sped through traffic in an auto, until you’ve tasted pani puri from a street vendor (and subsequently pooped) but really, don’t worry about the pooping. Once or twice and you’ll be immune, stood outside a movie star’s house with the rest of the crowd, walked around the giant malls, volunteered in a village and washed your clothes by hand on a cement slab, danced in an Annual Day program, layed on the ground in the village and stared at the stars sadly lamenting in the fact that you’ll never see the stars this big and bright at home.

I was fortunate enough to visit India on two occasions. While both were for business, I did get the opportunity to get out a bit to see the sights. In a nutshell, if you plan to go to India, be prepared to be amazed. When you live in a homogenous society, as I did - coming from the US, you are unprepared for the sensory overload that is India. Sights, sounds, smells, tastes bombard you from all angles. You will see the poorest of poor living immediately adjacent to unbelievable opulence. Foods can be as simple as rice and naan from a street vendor to sultan's thalis at extraordinary restaurants. The smells in New Delhi range from exhaust fumes from diesel and 2-cycle vehicles to rich Indian cuisine. Everywhere is hustle and bustle. A must see is the Taj Mahal in Agra, another is the Red Fort in Delhi (at dusk, they do a history presentation that is not to be missed). I look forward to going when I can spend some more time to take in more of what the diverse country has to offer.

You can thousand times adore Indian culture, architecture, diversity etc,
But answer the question of a person who is gonna make a decision where to go next vacation:

India is a unique country with a huge potential of tourism development,
But India doesn't do even 1% what it can do in order to make the country a good tourism destination.
