正月初五是很多地区“迎财神”的日子，也有一些地区是在正月初二或者其他时间迎财神。但是无论是哪天，人们辞旧迎新的美好愿望，和迎祥纳福的美好期盼都是一样的。祭品中要有羊头(sheep head)和鲤鱼(carp)，羊头有“吉祥”之意，而鲤鱼的“鱼”与“余”谐音，象征着“吉庆有余”以及“年年有余，”祈愿财神爷把金银财宝带到家里，在新的一年里大发大富。相传，正月初五是财神的生日，所以很多商人会选择在这一天“开市。”据说这一天“开市”的人，不管做什么生意，财运都会特别旺。

The fifth day of the Lunar New Year, is a day when people of many regions worship the God of Wealth, also there are places where people do this on the second day of the Lunar New Year or other days. But no matter which day it is, they carry the same best whishes that people have for bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new, and a more auspicious and prosperous life in the new year. At the worshipping to the God of Wealth, sheep heads and carps are always there for sacrifice: Sheep heads carry the meaning of "auspiciousness" while the carp, a kind of fish, prounced as "Yu"（written as "鱼"） in Chinese, which is of the same prounciation with another Chinese character "Yu"（written as "余"）, carries the meaning of "enough to spare with their fortune", and "surplus enough to share all over the year", they sacrifice these to the God of Wealth, hoping that he would bring all the good luck and all the wealth to their homes so that in the new year they will go greatly wealthy. It is said that this day is also the birthday of the God of Wealth, therefore, people prefer to kick-start their business on this day and no matter what business they do, they will all seize a big fortune.
