A Southwest Airlines jetliner hit and killed someone as it landed at Austin's main airport Thursday night, authorities said.

It's not easy to see a person on a runway especially in the dark. Reminded me of when I was a controller in the Air Force. A B-52 was taxiing out on a late night mission. They stopped on the taxiway and informed us there was a vehicle parked on the taxiway with two occupants. It was in direct line of sight from the tower and we couldn't see a thing.Turns out a couple security policemen got disoriented on the ramp, parked on the taxiway, and fell asleep. Lucky for them the aircraft was able to stop.

That dent is about perfect height for a 6' tall person's shoulder and head....at least they didn't go through the engine. I saw that happen on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier through an A-6. Not a pleasant sight.

I know there's a lot of physics involved, but the amount of damage done to that plane looks like it hit something much larger than a person. Also, on a plane like Southwest uses, the lowest point of the engine cowling is more than 6 feet off the ground, meaning that unless the person was struck by the landing gear, the plane would generally roll over/above a person on the runway.
