Cardiff Business School Scholarships in Business and Management and Economics

About the Programme:

The Cardiff Business School PhD programme will prepare you either for a career as a leading academic scholar or to excel as a business practitioner or policy decision maker. In line with our Public Value ethos, our PhD programme is designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to research current and important problems facing our economy and society. We host a vibrant and international community of more than 130 PhD students, who participate actively in every aspect of the School's research, teaching and collegial activities. We support the training needs of doctoral students with in-house training, via our Doctoral Academy(https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/business-school/courses/postgraduate-research), and external training such as the EDEN seminars.

This scholarship opportunity is open to Home, EU and International students and there are a range of scholarship opportunities available including, full fees and stipend and fees only. Scholarships are offered on a competition basis.

There are two PhD Programmes offered at Cardiff Business School, the PhD in Economics and the PhD in Business and Management. PhD in Business Studies: Within our 3-year full-time PhD in Business Studies, students can choose to develop their project in the following research areas: Accounting and Finance; Logistics and Operations Management; Management, Employment and Organisation; Marketing and Strategy. Training on research philosophy, design and methods will be provided during the PhD project.

Depending on entry-level qualifications and prior research training, admission to the programme may be subject to the successful completion of the Cardiff University's MSc in Social Science Research Methods (SSRM). Successful Scholarship holders may also have full fees and stipend paid for the MSc year.

PhD in Economics: The PhD in Economics is a 4-year full-time research programme hosted by the Economics section, which involves two years of advanced course work, and two years of research. The first year consists of an MSc Economics covering core subjects. In the second year, students complete the MRes Advanced Economics, while beginning to design their PhD research project. Years three and four comprise the PhD phase. It is also possible for suitably qualified students to join the PhD in Economics programme at the MRes stage, though they will be required to follow a slightly different programme to those students progressing directly from the MSc Economics (PhD Route).

Academic Requirement:

Students Applying to the PhD in Business Studies should preferably have a specialist Master-level degree in Business, Management, Social Sciences or related subjects, from an internationally renowned University.

Students Applying to the PhD in Economics should preferably have a Masters-level degree in Economics with an average of at least 65%.

潘晖老师于2006年获得新加坡国立大学物理学博士学位,2008年到2013年期间先后在新国大、新加坡超级计算中心、美国橡树岭国家重点实验室等国际顶尖科研机构以研究员和科学家身份从事新型功能纳米材料的计算设计和性能实验相关研究。

2013年开始潘老师加盟澳门大学应用物理及材料工程研究院,迄今为止,已经发表sci论文220余篇,文章总引用达9800多次,h-index为48. 此外,潘老师还拥有6项中国专利及4项美国专利。

荷语区鲁汶大学 Prof. Dr. Markus 团队博士项目招生

PhD position in brain and cognition

For your research, you will work with Prof. Dr. Markus and the members of his research group Social and Affective Neuroscience, part of the research unit Brain and Cognition at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, KU Leuven, Belgium. Our research unit is an international and vibrant research environment, consisting of 14 professors and several PhD students and postdocs. The research group Social and Affective Neuroscience headed by Prof. Dr. Wöhr was recently established and aims at improving translational research models for neuropsychiatric dysfunctions through deciphering rodent socio-affective communication. It is equipped with state-of-the-art behavioral neuroscience technologies and has strong international collaborations, including ETH Zürich, Switzerland, Peking University, China, Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany, and Stanford University, USA.

Project:

Rodents emit distinct types of ultrasonic vocalizations. We demonstrated that such ultrasonic vocalizations serve important socio-affective communicative functions in regulating social interactions. For instance, 50-kHz calls help to maintain social contact and promote play behavior and are associated with activity in brain reward centers, as shown in playback experiments (The Journal of Neuroscience, 2014). Their production can be provoked by pharmacological compounds, most notably amphetamine (British Journal of Pharmacology, 2021). Genetic rodent models for neuropsychiatric dysfunctions, such as autism, display deficits in ultrasonic communication (Molecular Autism, 2020). You will use combined behavioral, genetic, and pharmacological Approaches (1) to examine how ultrasonic vocalizations are involved in emotional contagion in rats, (2) to test whether emotional contagion is impaired in genetic rodent models for neuropsychiatric dysfunctions, and (3) to identify relevant underlying neurobiological mechanisms, focusing on chemical signaling. To these aims, a broad array of experimental techniques will be used, ranging from sound analysis and playback experiments to targeted genetic modifications and neurotransmitter-specific pharmacological interventions.

Profile:

  • You have (or will receive before the start date of the position) a very good academic degree (master, diploma or comparable), preferably in psychology, biology, neuroscience, or a related subject.

  • You have substantial experience in conducting behavioral studies in rodents and profound knowledge in neuroscience, pharmacology, and/or genetics. 

  • You have laboratory animal training (FELASA or comparable) or are motivated to complete it soon after starting the position.

  • You have a profound knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis software (e.g. SPSS). Knowledge of R, Python, and/or Matlab is an asset.

  • You have skills to critically analyze theoretical texts and empirical studies. You have a smooth writing style.

  • You can work independently, but you can also work well in a team. You are an adaptive mind and able to work flexibly.

  • You are able to successfully complete a doctoral research under supervision. You are motivated and eager to learn.

  • You have excellent social and communication skills, including English reporting skills (for oral and written communication).
