第三节 动词前缀“un-”
以前缀 un-开头的动词一般表示相反的意义。
1. cuff vt 给…带上手铐
uncuff vt 打开…的手铐。
uncuff them. 打开他们的手铐。
2. bar vt 把（某人）关在屋里或外面
He barred himself in. 他把自己关在屋里。
unbar vt 拔去门闩；打开；（喻）开放
unbar all the professions to women. 开放所有的职业给妇女。
3. bind vt （以绳等）束；缚；捆
They bound his legs (together) so that he shouldn’t escape.
他们把他的两腿绑起来使他不能逃跑。
unbind vt 拆散；解开；释放
They unbound all the political prisoners after liberation.
解放以后他们释放了所有的政治犯。
4. buckle vt 以扣环扣住
buckle a belt. 扣起带子。
unbuckle vt 松开或解开...的扣子。
Unbuckle your seat belt before opening the door. 开舱门之前，先解开安全带。
5. button vt （以纽扣）扣；扣起；扣紧
button (up) one’s coat. 扣起外衣的纽扣。
unbutton vt 解开(衣服等)
He unbuttoned the old man at once. 他立刻解开老人的衣服。
6. cork vt 用软木塞塞住
to cork a bottle. 用软木塞将瓶口塞住。
uncork vt 拔去（瓶）上的塞子
He uncorked the wine bottle. 他拔去酒瓶的塞子。
7. cover vt 盖，覆盖，遮盖
She covered her face with her hands. 她用双手蒙住她的脸。
uncover vt 移去…的覆盖物；（喻）揭露；宣布
He uncovered the box. 他将盒盖拿掉。
8. do vt 系上，把…扣紧; 做出（动作）
He can't do his top button up. 他扣不上他衣服上最上面的这粒纽扣。
undo vt 解开； 松开；恢复… 的原状
What’s done cann’t be undone. 做过的事无法挽回；覆水难收。
霍克斯在翻译《红楼梦》中的“生米煮成熟饭”时，使用了这个结构“The cooked rice
cannot be uncooked.”
9. dock vi/vt 在太空中对接（两个或多个太空舱）
undock vt/vi 使（太空舱等）与太空舱分离
Discovery is set to undock from the station on Monday.
“发现号”在周一将从空间站脱离。
10. dress vt 穿衣服
undress vt 除去或脱去…的衣服
Jane undressed her doll. 简脱去她那洋娃娃的衣服。
11. fit vt 适合于；合适
This coat doesn’t fit me. 这件上衣不适合我穿。
unfit vt 使不适合；使不能胜任
Drink unfits a man for work. 饮酒使人不能工作。
12. fold vt 折叠
unfold vt 展开
unfold a newspaper. 展开报纸。
13. mask vt 戴假面具；隐藏
unmask vt 揭去（…的）假面具或伪装
14. pack vt 包扎；包装（东西）；整理行装
unpack vt (由某包装)取出（东西）
He unpacked the doll carefully from its box. 他小心地将玩偶从盒中取出来。
15. quote vt 引述；引用
quote a verse from the Bible. 引用圣经中的一节。
unquote vt/vi 结束引语；引号止于此。
The rebel leader said (quote) ‘We shall never surrender’(unquote).
叛军领袖说（引号开始）‘我们决不投降’（引号终止）
16. roll vt 卷；将…绕成球形或圆柱形
unroll vt 展开；（将成卷之物）打开
The salesman quickly unrolled the carpet. 售货员迅速将地毯铺开。
17. say vt 说
unsay vt 取消（前言）；撤回
What is said cannot be easily unsaid. 话已出口，很难收回。
与前面的 “What is done can’t be undone. (覆水难收)”对比。
18. settle vt （使）镇定；（使）稳定；（使）平静
unsettle vt 使不安、担心或不确定；扰乱
Holidays often unsettle her. 假期常常使她浮躁不安。
19 . veil vt 以面纱遮掩；（喻）隐蔽
unveil vt 除去…的面纱或面罩
The statue will be unveiled tomorrow. 铜像将于明天揭幕。
