Origin of World Animal Day
After many months of research which involved going through 300
magazines 1924-1936 at the Berlin library and copying every article
related to World Animal Day, research at the Holocaust museum in
Washington DC, transporting heavy volumes of books across continents,
writing to numerous organizations and individuals and reading through
hundreds of articles in German and Italian, we have a pretty clear
picture about the origin of World Animal Day and the reliable
information sources to support it.
MISSION OF WORLD ANIMAL DAY
To raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards
around the globe. Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites
the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make
the world a better place for all animals. It's celebrated in different
ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or
political ideology. Through increased awareness and education we can
create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings
and full regard is always paid to their welfare.

编者按：10月4日是“世界动物日”。今年新调整了《国家重点保护野生动物名录》中的野生动物种类，让我们跟随一位检察官摄影师的镜头，一起来见证这些人类朋友的神奇魅力与自由。
【节日宗旨】
庆祝“世界动物日”的宗旨在于宣传饲养伴侣动物所带来的乐趣，让公众意识到动物对人类社会所做的贡献，同时促使各个动物保护组织齐心协力，推动人们以负责任的态度饲养伴侣动物。
【红色名录】
成立于1948年的世界自然保护联盟，总部位于瑞士格朗，这个著名的国际自然保护组织定期发布的濒危物种“红色名单”是最具权威性的物种评估文件。
进入21世纪，“世界动物日”变得越来越沉重，由于人类活动的影响，越来越多的动物濒临灭绝边缘。在著名环保组织“世界自然保护联盟”2008年9月公布的2007年濒危物种“红色名单”，称全球有1.6万多个生物物种有灭绝危险，其中动物在这份红色名单中占据多数，猿、秃鹰、北极熊、河马、鲨鱼、珊瑚、海豚等人们非常熟悉的动物物种都存在灭绝危险。
名单显示，全球有41415个物种面临生存威胁。其中，有16306个物种有灭绝危险，比2006年增加了188种。近500年来，全球已有785个已知物种灭绝，另有65个物种通过圈养或人工培育存活。
据估计，人类有记录的物种约有170万个。世界自然保护联盟特别强调了动物物种的危险性，截止2008年9月地球上四分之一的哺乳动物、三分之一的两栖动物、八分之一的鸟类正面临生存危险。
【纪念活动】
爱护动物已经是世界十大环保工作之一，所以自二十世纪20年代开始就有各国的环保团体在10月4日举行各种活动，以纪念10月4日世界动物日，和纪念圣方济各，宣传爱护动物、尊重动物，正视、善待与人类息息相关的动物。中国自1997年，正视世界动物日的存在，并开始组织有关的活动来纪念这一天。中国北京有爱护动物协会、小动物保护协会等多家民间公益性质的团体，它们每年都会纪念世界动物日
气候变暖对动物造成的危害
1.动物进化失去规则
传统观点认为进化是一个缓慢发展的过程，需要好几代的时间。然而，一些新的研究表明，面对瞬息万变的环境，植物和动物物种出现跳跃式的进化速度，主要原因是气候变化。气候变化加速爬行动物进化，某些动物为了顺应气候变化进化出形态各异的模样。
2.某些动物变得更大
科学家发现，目前的全球变暖趋势可能对动物的体型产生影响。美国加利福尼亚州的研究人员发现，旧金山湾和雷斯岬国家海岸公园附近的鸟类在过去的40至27年里慢慢变得更大。这一发现表明一些动物采用体型变大的方式应对气候变化。
3.某些动物变得更小
近期，有越来越多的研究显示，北极熊、松鼠、青蛙、果蝇等动物的个头都在变小。调查结果表明受变暖影响，世界上很多动物不再需要储存过多热量度日，因此在摄取食物和营养时变得消极，身体素质大不如从前。受此影响，动物的生长发育会变迟缓，个头也会长得越来越小。
4.动物某些功能丧失
研究人员发现，空气中二氧化碳含量越高，海水吸收二氧化碳越多，酸性就越强。这导致栖息于珊瑚礁与岩礁的小丑鱼正在失去它们的听力。这意味着，小丑鱼监听捕食者声音的能力降低，生存受到威胁。除躲避捕食者外，声音在搜寻同伴、集体捕猎、觅食中也具有重要作用，如果小丑鱼失去所有这些能力，后果不堪设想。
5.鸟类灭绝
最近的研究偶然发现了一个令人担忧的趋势：随着平均温度的升高，许多鸟类种群数量下降。根据美国犹他州立大学研究人员进行的调查发现，气温上升3.5摄氏度，可能导致600至900种鸟类濒临灭绝。
6.生物多样性降低

伊洛瓦底江海豚：生活在孟加拉国和东南亚其他地方，依靠河口的淡水过活。淡水温度和盐度的变化可能会对海豚长期生存造成影响。
麝牛：生活在北极冻原恶劣环境中的动物。它面临着大灰熊的捕食，因为越来越多的大灰熊会向北迁徙，进入麝牛的领地。
玳瑁：远洋航行的爬行动物，具有温度依赖性。较高温的度可导致更多的雌性孵化，这一点能使其性别比率失衡，从而影响它的寿命。
气候变暖 动物有喜有忧
研究表明一些动物已改变了原有的生活方式，逐渐适应气候变化所产生的影响，尤其是一些体型较小的陆地动物适应能力较强。气候变暖让老鼠丰衣足食；二氧化碳浓度升高，蚜虫个体取食量增加。
降水的增加可以通过改善植被，从而有利于鼠类种群的增长。研究表明，降水的增加使原本干旱的内蒙古地区植物更加丰富，也增加了鼠类的食物，长爪沙鼠种群密度随之增加。蚜虫是唯一一类对二氧化碳浓度升高响应发生种群增加的昆虫。二氧化碳浓度升高，蚜虫个体取食量增加。同时，二氧化碳浓度的升高还降低了蚜虫对报警信息素的响应，同时降低了天敌昆虫对蚜虫的捕食作用。未来蚜虫的发生与危害将更加严重。

Throughout history, social movements (mass actions) like World Animal Day, have always been a major vehicle for ordinary people’s participation in politics, and key in fighting for social justice and reform. It’s therefore essential that, as sentient beings, their rightful status as recipients of social justice is established and translated into effective animal protection. World Animal Day embraces all animals and the unique concerns of each, in every country, and makes animals front-page news. Through increased awareness and education, we can help develop a compassionate culture which feeds into legal reform and social progress to make this world a fairer place for all living creatures. A world where animals are recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare. World Animal Day has already brought about a significant and lasting contribution towards advancing animal welfare standards, and its influence will only continue to grow. Amina Abaza, who heads the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (SPARE), has used World Animal Day to successfully lobby for the addition of a clause about animal welfare in the new Egyptian Constitution and, more recently, submitted a Model Animal Welfare Act to the Egyptian Parliament.
Another ground-breaking event achieved by SPARE was held at Cairo University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine where animals are used in education. Attended by professors, students, the Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty, and other dignitaries, speeches were made by the President of the Egyptian Veterinary Association and representatives of several, highly-respected animal welfare NGOs to increase awareness about alternatives to the use of animals in education and a film was shown about animal suffering throughout the world.
Both Animals Lebanon and AnimaNaturalis Colombia have achieved a Municipal Resolution that requires the Secretariats of the Environment and Civic Culture to commemorate World Animal Day each year, which is helping tremendously to raise awareness among citizens about the ethical treatment of animals.
The Sudanese Animal Care & Environmental Organisation’s greatest achievement is the introduction of animal protection legislation by the Sudanese parliament. Much of the work to achieve this magnificent goal is attributed to increased awareness of animal welfare issues brought about by World Animal Day.
In many countries, World Animal Day is now being celebrated by various government departments. For example, the Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust (HART) is delighted that Nepal's Department of Livestock Services gets involved each year. Khageshwaar Sharma, our Ambassador in Nepal says: World Animal Day events encourage people to work together to sensitise communities, making them aware of the needs of animals they live among, and also of how they can improve their lives. There are other days linked to animals such as: World Day for Laboratory Animals on 24 April and World Wildlife Day on 3 March, and these are important too. However, World Animal Day is the one day of the year that embraces all animals and the unique concerns of each, in every country. It’s a special opportunity to commemorate our love and respect for animals by doing something special to highlight their importance in the world. It unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force for change. Participation in celebrating World Animal Day grows each year, with a huge variety of inspiring events being held in an increasing number of countries. In 2003, we recorded 44 events being held in 13 countries and this has now grown to an estimated 1000 events in around 100 countries. The role of a World Animal Day Ambassador
Our wonderful team of World Animal Day Ambassadors is made up of volunteers, who carry out two primary roles:

Encourage animal welfare organisations, community groups, youth and children’s clubs, businesses and individuals to organise events in celebration of this special day.

We ask Ambassadors to perform the following tasks throughout the year:
Contact organisations, schools, groups, clubs, sanctuaries and individuals to encourage them to organise events in celebration of World Animal Day, on or around October 4 (including non-animal related groups such as Brownies, Scouts, and other community groups);
Contact animal-related websites and encourage them to create a website link to help spread the message about the World Animal Day movement;
Contact celebrities in their country asking them for a written pledge of support, accompanied by an image, that can be added to the website ‘Celebrity Support’ page, to help maintain a truly international feel;
Submit articles to newspapers, magazines, radio and television leading up to October 4 in order to maximise media coverage which, in turn, will increase involvement in celebrations.
Organise an event each year in celebration of this special day.
Engage with the official World Animal Day social media channels.
World Animal Day Ambassadors can apply for the annual World Animal Day Grant sponsored by Naturewatch Foundation.
