二、原文
On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted. 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.

1)过去完成时
①形式 had done
②用法:立足过去的时间点,向之前看,看事情的完成状况(已完成或者部分完成)
2)词汇 gather, accumulate, assemble, collect
gather 指人自发或有意集合在一起,也指把分散的东西聚集起来
accumulate 指成年累月,长时间的积累
assemble 指为一定的目的,把零散的东西或人收集或集合在一起
collect 强调收集
3) crowds of 成群的
a large crowd of 一大群(较拥挤)
3. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes’ time.
1)in + 时间 表示在…时间之后 L37课中会再提到
也可以直接说in twenty minutes
2)twenty minutes’ time 名词所有格

3)would strike 过去将来时
①形式:would do 或者 was/were going to do
否定 : wouldn’t do 或者wasn’t/weren’t going to do

②用法:过去的将来,立足过去时间点,看将来的事情
4)过去将来VS 一般将来
立足时间点不同,过去将来立足过去某一时间点,一般将来立足现在
5) 过去将来VS 一般过去
过去将来立足过去某一时间点看将来的事,一般过去看过去某一时间点的事
6)词汇:strike, hit, beat, knock, crack
knock 是不及物动词,后面要跟介词后再接宾语 knock at/on the door
beat 反复地、连续地敲打 My heart beat fast with joy
hit 指有目的地击中某人或某物,侧重打中、击中 Hit the ball
strike 强调急速地、用力地敲打(用手、拳头或其他器物突然用力猛打一下) strike the clock 敲钟
Strike while the iron is hot 趁热打铁
crack 指突然的重击、往往暗示伴有响声。The boy fell and cracked his head against the wall
