作文续写能用到的引号的用法

 注意:英式和美式在标点的使用上有一些不同,该课件是基于美式英文。其次,该课件并不覆盖引号的所有用法,只适用于一半情形。

Rule 1 Capitalize the first letter of the quotedsentence. However, if you’re not quoting a complete sentence, no capitalizationis necessary.

The letter opened with, “We regret toinform you your application has been denied.”

The manager said that the situation was“under control.”


Rule 2 Include an opening quotation mark at thebeginning of each new quoted paragraph.

Here’swhat the email said:

“It’s been a long time. I hope you’rewell.

     “I’m writing because I’m coming to Atlantafor work, and I was wondering if you’d like to meet up.”


Rule 3 Use commas to introduce or interruptdirect quotations of dialogue or text.

•He said, “I don't care.”

•“Why,” I asked, “don't you care?”


Rule 4 If the quotation comes before he said,she wrote, they reported, Dana insisted, or a similar attribution, end thequoted material with a comma, even if it is only one word.

•“I don't care,” he said.

•“Stop,” he said.


Rule 5 Periods and commas ALWAYS go insidequotation marks.

•The sign read, “Walk.” Then it said,“Don't Walk,” then, “Walk,” all within thirty seconds.

•He yelled, “Hurry up.”


Rule 6 The placement of question marks and theexclamation with quotation marks follows logic.

•Alberta asked, “Will you still be myfriend?”

•Do you agree with the saying, “All's fairin love and war”?

•Alberta yelled in frustration, “I cannotbe your friend!”

•I hate when you say, “All's fair in loveand war”!


Rule 7 If a quoted question or an exclamationpoint ends in midsentence, the question mark or the exclamation point replacesa comma.

•“Ten alien ships are headed toward LosAngeles,” Reed said.

•“But how many have entered theatmosphere?” Salkin asked.

•“Help!” Jill screamed. 


Rule 8 Nicknames, and sometimes,titles of creative works such as songs, poems, movies, video games, books,articles, and works of art are placed in quotation marks.

•“The Great Gatsby” was written by F.Scott Fitzgerald.“Help!” Jill screamed.

•Richard Burton performed the song“Camelot” in the 1960 Broadway musical Camelot.


Rule 9 Quotation marks are often used withtechnical terms, terms used in an unusual way, or other expressions that varyfrom standard usage.

•It's an oil-extraction method known as“fracking.”

•He did some “experimenting” in hiscollege days.


Rule 10 Usesingle quotation marks for quotations within quotations.

•Dan said: “In a town outside Brisbane, Isaw ‘Tourists go home’ written on a wall. But then someone told me, ‘Pay it nomind, lad.’ ”

•Byung-hoon warned, “Mother will be angry. ‘Waituntil your father gets home,’ she'll say.”
