River Running Basics with Mike Tavare...

Everybody Mike t here for bad fish here on the Arkansas river on the river shred 9 six today we are going to bring you some river running basic technique, so we are going to go over the peel out.

The eddy turn and the ferry to get you guys more comfortable on the water.

So I'm going to let this run in real time first so you're about to see it peel out if you're not familiar with the peel out in any turns, so this is the peel out how you're going to get from the shore, from an eddy into the main current and then the eddy in is how you're going to stop or.

You're gonna catch an eddy safely to the shore of the river so that's how you're going to get in and out of the main current when you're paddling on whitewater arrived so we got some super slow Mo for you, so first we're going to talk about the peel out, so getting from the area into the main current of the river.

So a couple of things that are going to help you be successful in this POS so first off, note that I am in the center of the eddy, the least turbulent spots that'll set you up for success i've got a nice angle, so about a 45 degree angle, roughly where it's 12 o'clock is directly upstream, think about it.

Two o'clock angle so you know I'm picking up speed, you can paddle on both sides, but I am just paddling on the downstream side here and that way that'll help with my weight transfer here in a second, so when I am crossing the eddy line right about here, that's the most turbulent part of the peel out.

You'll note that I am paddling on my downstream side, which is hugely important, I am also leaning down streams and putting weight on the right hand side rail, in this case I am letting the.

Our current hit, the underside of that board as far as strokes goes, you'll note I am doing a bit of a compound stroke, a badger or followed by a four stroke, and that enables the board to be pulled downstream the direction that I want to go with that nose.

A nice combination stroke you can work on that Bao Bao draw and a forward stroke, or just let the water do most of the work for you, so that did the Puyallup so here I am again downstream, I'm gonna re catch this eddy in just a second, so essentially I am just going to reverse that peel up.

Back into the eddy, so you'll note I am about to change my angle, someone could be pointing roughly 45 degree angle toward shore, and the reason we do that angle is that enables us to slice across the eddy line with the least amount of turbulence so you know that are picking up some speed.

speed, it is important to bust across that any line once again so you'll know picking up speed and then I'm going to reverse that I'm gonna lean upstream in this case because that Eddie water is moving back upstream so you can see right here I'm doing on another bow draw followed by a forward stroke.

I'm leaning upstream, so I'm leaning to the right in this case and I'm going to let that water do all the work for me, turn my board upstream, and then i'll be sitting nice and safe and calm.

Right in that heady, so that's the peel out and the eddy turn.

All right, so next we're going to talk about the ferry so you're gonna see this in real time then we're gonna slow it down of course, so a ferry is what you're gonna do when you want to get across the river, so here you can see a moving latterly with very little downriver movement.

Across the river left, and then now I'm gonna move back to river right, so we use that if you need to get across the river around an obstacle, you can do a combination of a ferry, an appeal out if you need to get around an obstacle, or just get from one side to the other.

All right, so here we go with the slow Mo Farah all right, so the setup in a lot of ways for a peel out in a ferry are very similar, although you don't want to move downstream so that angle is going to be very important, so here I am, sitting up in the middle based COM spotted the idiom paddling picking up speed towards the main.

And the eddy line and right about here is a cross at edeline, I'm gonna make sure I keep a very high upstream angle, so if 12 is upstream, i've got about a one o'clock angle and that's going to move me laterally across the river to ensure that I don't go downstream C note.

Slight leaning down stream, but I'm paddling on the downstream side to counteract.

That board keep that angle facing upstream, so I just moved across, suggested a nice ferry, I actually switched paddle stroke sides and turned it into an eddy turn on the other side, said lean back upstream.

And now I'm going to move from river left back over to river right, so you'll note I am setting up once again a paddling on my downstream side, you'll see me here in a second adjust that angle, i've got a bad fairy angle right now, but I'm going to move it.

More of an upstream angle here, so roughly 11:00, if 12 o'clock is upstream somewhat, adjust that angle right about there is a hit that any line I'm going to keep that angle high paddling on the downstream side once again.

And that's gonna move me laterally across the river so that is a fairy are right here I am switching paddle sides essentially just to do a nice eddy turn on this side, so now I'm leaning back upstream as they catch this Eddie.

So that was a nice combination of a ferry, and 80 turn has to get me safely back in the river right eddy.
