Jill在家————

The Augmented Eye————

dangER/U/————————

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Dana:

Dana: Well, let's see...

Dana:Gil

Dana: Gil is in the back getting everything ready...

Dana:

Dana: I'll go grab some food I've ordered.

Dana:

Dana: They only agreed to work on New Year's if I went to pick it up myself.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Dana:

Dana: Are you alright?

Jill:……

Jill: ...I'm scared.

Jill:Gaby

Jill: Gaby will show up at any minute.

Dana:

Dana: Relax, everything will be alright! I can assure you of that.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Dana:

Dana: Drink something! Maybe that will cheer you up!

Jill:……

Jill: ...maybe.

Dana:

Dana: I'll leave you for a bit, but keep your chin up!

Dana: If you get through this, I'll give you... I don't know, a hug. Does that work?

Jill:

Jill: A-A hug?

Dana:

Dana: A big one. A reward for after everything's said and done.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Dana:

Dana: Gotta go! You can do it!

Jill:

Jill: R-Right...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill: (Everything's fine...)

Jill: (You've been avoiding this for all these years, now it's time to face it head-on.)

Jill: (Yeah! Everything's fine!)

Jill: (Everything will be better after I talk to Gaby.)

Jill:(Boss

Jill: (Boss might even give me a hug!)

Jill: (I'm okay!)

Gaby:呃……你好。

Gaby: Um... hello.

Jill:Gaby……

Jill: Gaby...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:……

Jill: ...c-come in.

Gaby:

Gaby: Excuse me...

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Jill: Welcome to Valha-...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill & Gaby:

Jill & Gaby: Hey!

Jill & Gaby: ……

Jill & Gaby: ...

Jill:

Jill: Y-You talk first.

Gaby:

Gaby: No, I...

Gaby:

Gaby: Well...

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:……

Jill: ...some days ago, I got a letter.

Jill:

Jill: And even odder than getting a letter, is the fact that...

Jill:……

Jill: ...it was from your sister.

Gaby:什么?

Gaby: A what?

Gaby:

Gaby: My sister sent you a letter? That's the first I've heard of it.

Gaby:

Gaby: What did it say?

Jill:

Jill: I don't know, I never opened it.

Jill:……

Jill: ...at least not until now.

Gaby:

Gaby: Huh?

Jill:

Jill: I figured I should read it with you.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: Yeah, let's do it.

Gaby:

Gaby: Let's read it.

Jill:好……

Jill: Alright then...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

……...

Sorry.

……...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: Just... Just that?

Jill:是的。

Jill: Yup.

Gaby:

Gaby: Isn't there anything else in the letter? Maybe on the back?

Jill:*

Jill: *sigh* This is just like your sister.

Jill: I spent days worried about this letter, not wanting to open it for fear of what it might contain.

Jill:

Jill: I lost sleep and Appetite thinking about it.

Jill:

Jill: And after all those worries, after all those problems...

Jill: After all these years not talking to her, she sends me a letter, a fu【屏~蔽~_(:з」∠)_】  king letter of all things.

Jill:

Jill: And she just says "Sorry"?!

Jill: Sorry for what?! For our fight? For not talking all these years?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: Agh! Now I'm fuc【屏~蔽~_(:з」∠)_】  ing pissed.

Gaby:

Gaby: Heheh...

Jill:

Jill: ...are you laughing?

Gaby: Heheheheh... Sorry, I just... heheh... I remembered all the times my sis provoked you that way.

Gaby:

Gaby: Like that time where she gave you chocolates labeled 1, 2 and 4 during Valentine's Day.

Gaby:

Gaby: And you were pissed about the lack of a 3.

Gaby: Or that time when you left an unopened Beer bottle on the table, she sneakily opened it and took a sip.

Gaby:

Gaby: She didn't tell you she did it and you were confused all day long.

Jill:

Jill: She always bragged she knew me like the back of her hand.

Jill:……

Jill: ...if the letter was supposed to piss me off like that, I guess she had all the rights to brag.

Gaby:

Gaby: Maybe she was being sincere, though.

Gaby:

Gaby: She did express to me that she was sorry on more than one occasion.

Jill:

Jill: She did, huh?

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: You told me she died from... Localized Nanomachine Rejection, right?

Gaby:

Gaby: In her heart, yeah.

Gaby: Instead of the massive rejection that always makes the news, her case was more... focused.

Gaby: They usually amputate or replace the part and call it a day.

Gaby: But organs are different. The condition made her susceptible to transplant rejections.

Jill:

Jill: Not to mention artificial hearts and genetic treatments were out of the question.

Gaby:是的。

Gaby: Yup.

Gaby:

Gaby: Thing is, Apparently, she suffered that since she was 18, but kept it a secret from everyone.

Jill:

Jill: Why?

Gaby:

Gaby: Hell if I know. I was angry to learn that she hid it.

Gaby: Why didn't she tell me?! Was it to avoid worrying me? Was she ashamed? What was it?!

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: Wait, how did she live so normally then?

Gaby:

Gaby: She had to use a serum. Shots near her heart every three days.

Gaby: Apparently, the serum burns like hell. The shot even left her a nasty mark where she had to Apply them.

Jill: (So the thing near her left breast wasn't a birth mark?)

Jill:

Jill: And the rejection was what ended up killing her?

Gaby: The Nanomachine Rejection was what ended up killing her, but they couldn't find what made her so vulnerable.

Gaby: Doctor said she might have missed a shot, or the shots made her other defenses grow weaker.

Gaby: The condition could've just gone nuts outta nowhere, or maybe it was blood pressure.

Gaby: Maybe it was a regular heart attack and the rejection acted afterwards, they don't know.

Gaby:

Gaby: She kept it a secret from everyone, so nobody knows!

Gaby: Maybe if she had told me about it, I could've helped her, maybe she'd still be alive.

Gaby: Maybe she wouldn't have faced it alone instead of just dying in her sleep.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: Thinking about what ifs won't bring her back.

Gaby:呃?

Gaby: Eh?

Jill: I spent so much time hammering myself with what ifs after you told me she died.

Jill: What if I waited to cool down a bit back then? What if I just swallowed my fears at that very moment?

Jill: What if I had apologized earlier? What if I had given a chance to the research institute thing back then?

Jill:

Jill: And the amount just increased threefold after I lashed out at you the other day.

Jill:

Jill: But today, I realized something.

Jill:

Jill: Having such regrets with the dead is a hollow effort.

Jill: You're alive, you're here. I can make amends with you... but I can't make amends with the dead.

Jill:

Jill: I can't apologize to her like I can apologize to you right now.

Gaby:Jill……

Gaby: Jill...

Jill:Lenore,

Jill: Lenore, she's...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: She's resting now.

Jill:

Jill: She's just resting after having that heart condition all these years.

Gaby:

Gaby: She didn't have to face it alone, though. If she only...

Jill:

Jill: So! Let's celebrate her life and achievements.

Jill: If we are to mourn, let's mourn her together. If we are to honor her, we'll do it together.

Gaby:

Gaby: Together...

Jill:Lenore

Jill: Lenore was a fun-loving person. The best we can do right now is try to lighten up, even if it's only for a moment.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Jill: I need to ask, though. Did she really start to complain about chest pains shortly after I left?

Gaby:

Gaby: N-No...

Gaby: She didn't get visibly worse after you left or anything. Everything was actually too sudden.

Gaby: She did complain about chest pains from time to time, but that actually goes way back before you left.

Gaby:

Gaby: Back then, we thought it was just acid reflux or something.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: Gods, I even blamed her death on you.

Gaby: I was just too angry back then, and part of me just wanted to put the blame on... someone or something.

Gaby:

Gaby: And you didn't deserve that. Sorry.

Jill:

Jill: Hey, I'm sorry too, you know?

Jill:

Jill: We both have things to apologize for. Don't think too much about it.

Jill:

Jill: I should've been mature and not shouted at you either. So.

Jill:

Jill: Let's just call all that water under the bridge, shall we?

Gaby:

Gaby: Are you sure?

Jill:

Jill: Of course I am.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: So, how did you find me, exactly?

Gaby:

Gaby: E-Eh? Um...

Gaby: Well... have you heard of a message board called danger/u/?

Jill:……

Jill: ...I have, yeah.

Gaby:

Gaby: Well, truth is that I visit it from time to time.

Gaby:

Gaby: And the other day, I read a thread that discussed the bar.

Gaby:

Gaby: And the description of the bartender sounded just like you.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: Are you mad?

Jill:

Jill: No, not mad. More like... dumbfounded.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby: Hey Jill, can you tell me what the problem was back then?

Gaby:

Gaby: What sparked that fight? Weren't you hAppy with my sister?

Jill:

Jill: Well... hm...

Jill:

Jill: Back then, I didn't know what to do with myself after I graduated college.

Jill:

Jill: I went in and pretty much hated my last couple of years there.

Jill: It's not far-fetched to think that I only tolerated being there because your sister was with me.

Jill:

Jill: Had she stopped supporting my studies, I would've quit right then and there.

Jill: And then after graduating, I got a very good job offer... that she accepted on my behalf in no time.

Jill: She kept saying it was the best for me and my future, but I was LIVID. Why did she have to do that?

Jill: I hated it... I didn't even know if I wanted to go there, but she still insisted so much.

Jill:

Jill: Like she was forcing that burden on me.

Jill: And then "my" became "our" future and she started talking about marriage...

Gaby:

Gaby: YOU WERE GOING TO GET MARRIED?!

Jill:

Jill: I don't think we ever took it seriously! It was just something she kept mentioning.

Jill: Not like we didn't think about that down the line, but she mostly teased me with it.

Jill:

Jill: But the thought suddenly scared the shit out of me...

Jill: I loved her, but I don't think I was ready for such a commitment. Especially considering what she did.

Jill: I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I wasn't going to let her decide such a big thing for me.

Jill:

Jill: I mean, she could be really pushy from time to time.

Jill: Like I said, I pretty much passed college thanks to being with her. And that was partly because she was so pushy.

Jill:

Jill: Even if she had the best intentions, she could be... abrasive from time to time.

Jill:

Jill: And it rained down on me at that moment.

Jill: She took it upon herself to make that choice for me. What would have stopped her once we'd gotten married?

Jill: What if she suddenly decided to craft my life to her needs after marriage?

Jill: I knew her. She would do it thinking it was the best for me. But what about my freedom? My say on the matter?

Gaby: So that's where you stopped loving Lenore?

Jill:

Jill: No! No, no...

Jill: I never stopped loving her, which is why it hurt so much. But you have to understand.

Jill: I didn't want to wake up 40 years old and working a job I hate.

Jill:

Jill: Just out of routine. Getting used to it.

Jill:

Jill: I wanted a break from everything for a while to put my thoughts in order.

Jill:

Jill: Regroup myself. Think carefully about what to do next.

Gaby: I can understand. I've sometimes felt the same, although I'm not even in college.

Gaby:

Gaby: So that's what led to you two fighting, huh?

Jill: Heh. You know, the word "fight" makes it sound like we exchanged blows or something.

Jill:

Jill: It's all silly when I think back to it. Tragically silly.

Jill:

Jill: Maybe I was the one who started the fight, getting all defensive about not wanting to take that offer.

Jill: Perhaps if I didn't overreact to her arguments about wasting this huge opportunity...

Jill:

Jill: Maybe she wouldn't have lashed out at me this bad.

Jill: It could've been avoided if I had just kept a cool head and talked about that with her.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...my sister said something like that.

Jill:呃?

Jill: Eh?

Gaby: I told you she mentioned on more than one occasion how sorry she was about the whole thing, right?

Gaby: "Should've listened to her to the end, but instead I kept pushing her."

Gaby: "I should've kept a cool head instead of letting my jealousy take the best of me."

Gaby: "It was her offer, not mine. Should've stopped projecting myself so much into her."

Gaby:

Gaby: Something like that.

Jill:Lenore……

Jill: Lenore...

Gaby: Heheh... we are quite the hot heads. You, me, my sis.

Jill: You were supposed to be the mature one, you know? Play your role correctly!

Gaby:

Gaby: Heh...

Gaby: But why didn't you come back, Jill? Did you end up hating us that much?

Gaby:

Gaby: Did the break include us too?

Jill:

Jill: No, it's just that...

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill: Remember when your sister was giving a class and you broke a window?

Jill:

Jill: How you didn't want to see her for fear of being scolded?

Gaby:

Gaby: But my sister wouldn't have scolded you.

Jill:

Jill: But I was afraid. Dead afraid. I couldn't bring myself to face your sister.

Gaby: But I faced her back then, and I was, like, 7 at the time. Why couldn't you do it?

Jill:

Jill: It's... not quite the same.

Jill:

Jill: And in perspective, no matter what reason I come up with, it will never make sense.

Jill: Everything sounds very stupid when I look back, you know? Not that it makes things easier.

Jill: I won't ever get to speak to her ever again, and it feels bad because it's stupid!

Gaby:

Gaby: I swear, you and my sis were meant for one another.

Gaby: You both moved on after all that, but neither had the courage to go back and say you're sorry.

………………

Jill: *sigh* And like I said, berating myself over those past mistakes won't bring her back.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...I miss her so much though.

Gaby:

Gaby: We were together all the time! Always talking about dumb stuff.

Gaby:

Gaby: I wouldn't call my parents useless, but she was the one I could always talk to.

Gaby:

Gaby: I feel her absence every day.

Gaby:

Gaby: Everything is just so... quiet now.

Jill:

Jill: She was an amazing person.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill:

Jill: Yeah! She was an amazing person!

Gaby:

Gaby: E-Eh?

Jill:

Jill: Mourning is fine and all, but we should be celebrating her life!

Jill: If she was here, she would tell us that there's no fun in sulking for so long.

Gaby:

Gaby: She told YOU that all the time.

Jill:

Jill: The same way she told you to stop rubbing things in people's faces.

Jill:

Jill: Both figuratively and literally.

Gaby:

Gaby: Hey! I was eight back then.

Jill:

Jill: So, let's have a toast in her honor, shall we?

Gaby:

Gaby: A toast?

Jill:

Jill: Yeah! Let me get you a drink.

Gaby:

Gaby: A-A drink?

Jill:

Jill: Don't worry, trust me.

Jill:

Jill: Grab this for a sec.

Gaby:

Gaby: O-Okay.

Jill:*

Jill: *ahem*

Jill:Lenore,

Jill: Lenore, I know you're watching from the beyond right now... as I give a drink to your little sister.

Jill: It's obvious to me now that we both meant to make amends at some point, but we never got around to it.

Jill:

Jill: I can't apologize to you anymore, but I can at the very least make you rest easier.

Jill: So know that I'll look out for Gaby in your absence.

Jill: I'll make sure Gaby grows into a fine woman, just like you were. I'll always be there for her.

Jill: I'll be sure the little brat doesn't face the same problem you and I had.

Gaby:

Gaby: Hey!

Jill:

Jill: Want to add anything?

Gaby:呃……

Gaby: Um...

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: I'll always miss her.

Jill:

Jill: Don't say it to me. Say it to her.

Gaby:

Gaby: That's a bit...

Jill:

Jill: Come on. Just this once.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: I-I'll always miss you, sis!

Gaby:

Gaby: Sis...

Gaby: Sis... you idiot! Why did you keep that secret for so long?! Idiot! Idiot!

Gaby: *sniff* I always told you everything. Wasn't I enough? You idiotic IDIOOOOOOOOT!

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:……啊!

Gaby: ...Agh!

Gaby: Hey, Jill! Promise me you won't be like that knucklehead. That you won't keep stuff like that to yourself.

Jill:

Jill: Only if you promise the same to me.

Gaby:

Gaby: And... And promise me we won't fight.

Jill:

Jill: I can't do that.

Gaby:诶?

Gaby: Eh?

Jill:

Jill: You and I are both too thickheaded. Sooner or later we'll clash on some opinion.

Jill:

Jill: But what I can promise is that I won't run away like last time.

Jill: We'll both cool off and talk it over like the adults we are.

Gaby:

Gaby: I'm... not an adult.

Jill:

Jill: Let's face it. You've been more mature than I have.

Gaby:

Gaby: Heheh...

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: Hey, did you mean what you said? That you'll look after me?

Jill: I'll always be here for you, Gaby. I mean, I'm not Lenore, but...

Jill:

Jill: I wouldn't dare leave my little sister alone.

Gaby:Jill……

Gaby: Jill...

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: H-Hey, wasn't this a toast?

Jill:对了!

Jill: Right!

Jill: For Lenore. Faithful sister and girlfriend.

For Lenore.

Jill:

Jill: Cheers!

Gaby:

Gaby: Cheers!

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...

Gaby:

Gaby: Um, so...

Gaby:

Gaby: About this drink...

Gaby:

Gaby: Can I drink it?

Jill:

Jill: Do you like it? Take a sip.

Gaby:……

Gaby: ...it's not bad.

Jill:

Jill: Why not drink it then? You're with an adult.

Jill:

Jill: We might as well break the alcohol taboo here and now.

Gaby:

Gaby: R-Right.

Jill:

Jill: Yeah... give it to me.

Jill:

Jill: It might be too strong for a kid.

Gaby:

Gaby: O-Oh...

Jill: Now that I think back to it. Didn't your sister give you Beer once as a prank?

Gaby:

Gaby: Oh yeah. That.

Gaby: It was April Fool's. I should've known better when she offered me Apple soda.

Gaby:

Gaby: I put bubblegum on the soles of all her shoes in retaliation.

Gaby:

Gaby: She walked funny. And my jaw hurt for the rest of the day.

Jill:

Jill: Yeah, but did you know you got my drink that time?

Gaby:

Gaby: Huh?

Jill:

Jill: She gave me a Beer and it turned out to be Apple soda.

Gaby:哦。

Gaby: Oh.

Gaby:

Gaby: Did you get back at her?

Jill:

Jill: Well...

Jill: (I did hide all the dildos in the house that night... only to find out she knew how to use a cucumber.)

Jill: (And as a follow up, she used that same cucumber in a salad days later.)

Jill: (She said, "so, do you like eating me for lunch?")

Gaby:Jill?

Gaby: Jill?

Jill:

Jill: I'll... tell you when you're older.

Jill: (Or never at all.)

Gaby:……?

Gaby: ...?

Jill: Hey, Gaby. Do your parents know you're here?

Gaby: They think I'm at Clarie's, actually.

Jill:谁?

Jill: Who?

Gaby:

Gaby: Oh. She's my best friend at school.

Jill: And this Clarie knows you're using her as an excuse, right?

Gaby:

Gaby: Of course! How would she cover for me otherwise?

Jill:

Jill: True.

Jill:

Jill: Will you go to her house afterwards?

Gaby:

Gaby: To be honest, I didn't think that far...

Gaby: Maybe I will, I do live in another district, but Clarie doesn't live close by, so...

Gaby:

Gaby: Hm...

Jill:

Jill: Well, it can't be helped.

Jill: I live nearby and the streets aren't exactly safe at night. Why not stay with me tonight?

Gaby:

Gaby: A-Are you sure?

Jill: I don't live in a mansion, but I'd say it's comfy enough. At least to spend the night.

Gaby:

Gaby: Sure! I'd love to stay with you!

Jill:

Jill: Great.

Jill: Hey, does your dad still have that bakery? His bread was really good.

Gaby:

Gaby: Yup! He opened a second branch last year.

Jill:

Jill: So he's looking to expand?

Gaby: I think he got into a partnership with a friend in Motor District.

Gaby: The guy saw an opportunity after realizing Motor District has almost no bakeries.

Jill:

Jill: I still remember when your sister introduced me to him.

Jill: He started shouting "I knew it! I fu 【屏~蔽~_(:з」∠)_】  king knew you were a lesbian! Mark one for daddy!"

Gaby: I think he had this bet with an acquaintance of his ever since my sis was 12 years old or so.

Gaby:

Gaby: Dad said sis was into girls. The acquaintance didn't believe him...

Gaby:

Gaby: He bet a Beer on whether he was right or not.

Gaby: ...that Beer bottle is still in the fridge. It's even labeled "sweet victory".

Jill:呵。

Jill: Heh.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Jill: Your mom and Lenore never made up, did they?

Gaby:*

Gaby: *sigh*

Gaby:

Gaby: I guess that one wasn't as simple as the "said one too many things" argument.

Gaby: Mom was always obsessed with high society and in her circle of friends, a lesbian daughter was a no-no.

Gaby:

Gaby: I'm still on my sis' side for that one, though.

Gaby: Mom didn't reject her because she herself was homophobic, she did it because her friends were.

Gaby: To mom, the opinion of her circle of friends was worth more than her own daughter.

Jill: How did she react to her death?

Gaby:

Gaby: Dunno, mom and dad broke up two years ago.

Jill:

Jill: They did?

Gaby:

Gaby: They never got married, so there was no proper divorce.

Gaby:

Gaby: I haven't seen her since... August, I think.

Jill:

Jill: Did you two fight too?

Gaby:

Gaby: No, she just hasn't showed up.

Jill:

Jill: You must've felt alone, huh? I've been there.

Gaby:

Gaby: A bit, but I'm not alone anymore. Thanks to you.

Jill:……

Jill: ...

Gaby:Jill,

Gaby: Jill, I'm a bit dizzy...

Jill:

Jill: Must be the alcohol.

Gaby:

Gaby: The WHAT?!

Jill:

Jill: I did say "let's break the alcohol taboo," didn't I?

Gaby:

Gaby: Yeah, but...

Jill:

Jill: Don't worry, it'll pass in a bit.

Jill: And let this be a warning of the dangers of taking things from strangers in bars.

Jill: First you feel dizzy, then you wake up in a bathtub full of ice.

Gaby: If you're trying to justify your action with a moral, you're digging yourself deeper.

???: Huh? I thought there was gonna be a party here.

Jill:Alma,

Jill: Alma, over here.

Gaby:派对?

Gaby: Party?

Jill:

Jill: A small New Year's celebration.

Jill:

Jill: Wanna stay for it?

Gaby:

Gaby: I-I don't want a kid to burden...

Jill: Don't worry, you won't. You'll only get cola for the night, though. No alcohol.

Gaby:

Gaby: I think it's a bit late for that.

Jill:*

Jill: *ahem*

Jill: It'll give us time to catch up even more. I can introduce you to some friends. Are you in?

Gaby:

Gaby: If you don't mind me...

Jill:

Jill: Great.

Jill: Hey Alma! Come here, there's someone I wanna introduce to you.
