The High Marshal is the Chapter Master of the Black Templars Chapter. He is the commander in chief and responsible for the progress of each Crusade and must uphold the honour of the Emperor and his Chapter. The High Marshal is steeped in the lore of the Black Templars and is the living manifestation of the Chapter, knowledgeable in all its secrets. Ultimately he is the only one who knows the exact number of Black Templars active in the Galaxy.

Further more the High Marshal is one of the most autonomous commanders in the Imperium, decreeing where his warriors are deployed without having to justify himself before the High Lords of Terra.

Crusader Squads are the backbone of any Black Templars formation with a Fighting Company and consist of varying levels of Initiates, and Neophytes. The majority of the Chapter's Battle-Brothers are organized into these squads. Many are led by Sword Brethren - veterans who deeds and example inspire Initiates to even greater acts of courage. The squads are primarily armed with the holy Bolter, though given the Black Templars' preference for close combat, many choose to carry Chainswords and other melee weapons.

With the Black Templars, larger Crusades are broken down by their Marshal into Fighting Companies, led by warriors who are given the honorific of Castellan. The name "company" however does not mean that it has at least 100 marines fighting in it. Fighting Companies may even consist of only 10 marines. The individual Crusader Squads or marines and specialists (such as Techmarines and Apothecaries) in a Fighting Company will fight side by side more out of familiarity and comradeship rather than any imposed organization.

A Marshal leads a Black Templars Crusade and is second only to the High Marshal. A marshal can be compared to a company commander although the number of Space Marines under his command can vary.Marshals are chosen from the Sword Brethren, the Black Templars elite troops

Castellan is a rank within the Black Templars Chapter.Sometimes a Black Templars Crusade will be split up into various Fighting Companies. To lead these, the Marshal in charge of the Crusade will appoint a Sword Brother with the honorarium of Castellan. This grants them a rank equivalent to a Codex Chapter's Company Captain, although it does not mean that there are at least 100 Initiates under his command as there may be as few as 10 or 20. Normally a Chaplain will also accompany the Castellan to keep him and the Brethren in line.

Sword Brethren are the Black Templars equivalent to the First Company of other Chapters. Black Templar veterans are elevated to this rank and placed in separate squads where they will fight as elites, train to use Terminator Armour (they are the only Black Templars allowed to use the armour) or form a Marshal's bodyguard. Because of this they are exempt from training Neophytes and unlike squads with Initiates, Neophytes will not be found in a Sword Brethren squad.During Crusades, a Marshal can also appoint a Castellan to lead one of the Fighting Companies. This Castellan is picked from the Sword Brethren as is the case when a Castellan or Marshal is killed, the new one will be picked from the Sword Brethren.

Initiates are the mainline rank of a Fighting Company of the Black Templars Space Marines. Initiates are the backbone of a Fighting Company, playing a role similar to Tactical Marines. After honing their skills, Initiates may specialise in a particular area of combat, such as jump pack assaults, heavy weapons or bikes.

In addition to their combat duties, Initiates are responsible for picking and training Black Templars Neophytes and guiding them in battle. The Initiate decides when the Neophyte has completed his training, after which the Neophyte is implanted with the Black Carapace and receives his power armour.

Neophytes are the new recruits of the Black Templars. Unlike other Codex Chapters, new recruits are not organised into a single company. Instead, each Neophyte joins a Fighting Company as the apprentice of a senior Initiate. While the Black Templars do not have a dedicated Scout company, Neophytes often fulfill this role, beginning their service with lighter armour and weapons than the Initiates.A Neophyte will learn quickly from his tutor or die if he cannot. When the Initiate and Chaplains deem that the Neophyte has proven himself satisfactory in courage and skill, he is elevated to the rank of Initiate and will take his place in the Fighting Company. Should the Initiate in charge of a Neophyte die before the Neophyte's training is complete, his training and instruction will be taken over by another Initiate, if that Initiate finds the Neophyte worthy of his tutelage.

Neophytes that failed their duty became the Cenobite Servitors and eternally follows the Chaplains of the Chapter to defend them and plays devotional chants and Chaplain's inspirational sermons from the speakers in their respirator collars.
