金鸡菊得名于希腊神话中的科尔。在草地上采摘野花时，科尔（又名珀尔塞福涅）被哈迪斯绑架，带到冥界。在绝望中，得墨忒耳达成了一项协议，允许她的女儿在经历了四个月贫瘠的冬天后，每年春天都能回来。科尔在生者之地的八个月里，狂欢不断，世界绽放出色彩和欢乐。金鸡菊对切罗基人和阿帕奇人来说也是神圣的，他们用这种植物来进行春季仪式和祝福。

Coreopsis takes its name from Kore in Greek mythology. While picking wildflowers in the meadow, Kore (also known as Persephone) was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld. In despair, Demeter struck a bargain that would allow her daughter to return each spring after four months of barren winter. For the eight months Kore is in the land of the living, there is continuous revelry and the world blooms with color and joy. The coreopsis plant was also sacred to the Cherokees and Apaches, who used the plant for spring rituals and blessings.
