The clematis is known for its climbing habit, gently making its way up over arbors and trellises, lending a lofty beauty to the garden. It was christened the “Virgin’s Bower”as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth I, who was taken with its enchanting fragrance. The flower came to be associated with her intelligence and mental beauty. Later, as the popularity of the clematis spread, the flower also came to emblemize worldliness. It was also called”Traveler’s Joy”since the spreading vine provided shade on porches and inn entranceways.
