Hi Anki,
Anki,
Tim is doing better and is in good spirits. They did a cat scan yesterday and it confirmed he has severe pancreatitis. The doctors say he should spend at least 1–2 more days in the hospital. He had a small fever last night but it didn’t last long. He’s feeling much better, and the pain is not as bad.
I will keep you updated.

Anki Lidén was walking aimlessly through Malmö. At a theatre in town, she was acting in a farce about a mustard maker and his illegitimate children, but it was impossible to focus on comical intrigues and mix-ups on stage when her Tim-a-lim was lying in a hospital bed on the other side of the world.
The whole situation had felt quite unreal for a long time now. Her son, who had sometimes refused to leave his own room, was now standing in front of tens of thousands of new people every night. Upraised and worshipped and therefore alone.
Tim sometimes called at night, proudly telling her that he had figured out how to handle the moments up in the bright spotlight. It was important not to catch anyone’s gaze. Just look out over the waves of heads, away towards the horizon. And look happy, laugh a lot. When he mimed along and really articulated the lyrics of the songs, the audience seemed to be satisfied. But being forced to be nice and approachable, to take selfies and do interviews and have dinners with club owners, it took effort. Each promoter wanted to invite him to a restaurant and then arrange their own small interview with which they could market their clubs or festivals.
Anki had tried to remind him that it was okay to say no to things. The next time someone came up and wanted to take a photo, he could, for example, say that he was on his way to an important meeting. That’s what she used to do when she was recognised in town.
As she walked, Anki pondered how Tim was doing over there in the hospital. Really, she just wanted to cancel everything, take a taxi to the airport and board a plane to New York. But her son did not want that. It was completely unnecessary for his parents to fly over, he said. He was fine, he insisted – he had finally been given a few days off and would probably be discharged any day anyway.
Now the doctors knew what was wrong. The diagnosis was, in medical parlance, pancreatitis.
The pancreas sits high up in the abdomen and secretes a fluid that helps the body break down food. A large and continuous intake of alcohol can cause inflammation and lead harmful enzymes to break down the organ. Moreover, Tim’s doctors had explained that, in addition to the alcohol, his acne medication was probably playing a role. The three-day dose that Tim had ingested just before the hospital stay had probably been a trigger.
For the inflammation to have a chance to heal, Tim would need to be sober for at least six months, probably more. If the stomach was not properly restored now, it might never be. In that case, Tim risked getting chronic pain for the rest of his life.
Anki ended up at McDonald’s at the Triangeln shopping centre, among high school students and prams. While ordering her McFeast meal, she heard a piano loop she recognised. It was ‘Fade into Darkness’, Tim’s song about running away from the darkness and into the light.
‘That’s my son who wrote this fantastic tune!’
That’s what she wanted to shout out across the whole restaurant, to the mothers on parental leave and the snotty toddlers on this dull day in Malmö.
‘Hey! Isn’t it extraordinary!?’
But she controlled herself, quietly chewing her burger. She could become so anxious and full of emotions that she would almost shut down. She didn’t want to end up there. It was still a consolation that Tim seemed to be okay in the hospital, and that Emily, Felix and Malik were with him. Tim’s North American agent, David Brady, had also gone down there from Toronto.
Tim had been prescribed painkillers. Anki did not really know what kind of medicine it was, but it was good that there was help available.
