戚继光字元敬,号南塘,晚号孟诸,明朝杰出的军事家、爱国将领,中国历史上著名的民族英雄。戚继光出身将门,从小就立志疆场,保国卫民,曾留下“封侯非我意,但愿海波平”的名句。其戎马一生中,他最为人所知的是率军抗击倭寇(Japanese pirates)的伟大胜利,他的领袖气质和大无畏气概,以及对长军事改进中的创新思维。民间有流传着一种说法,福建人吃的一种叫做“光饼”的烤饼,是最初为戚继光的军队而制作。1562年,戚继光率兵在浙闽沿海抗倭时,当地百姓为了慰劳戚家军,应对抗倭途中的饥饿,为他们制作军粮。其中就有一种形似铜钱,大小如手掌,表面光滑,中间有一个小洞的面饼。这些面饼不易变质,且方便串在一起,为戚家军夺取抗倭胜利的提供了便利和充足的食品供应。为了纪念戚家军抗倭胜利,这款烤饼被人们称作“光饼,”体现着百姓对这位伟大将领的爱戴。戚继光于60岁时,贫病中卒于故乡,追授谥号武毅。

Qi Jiguang, who styled himself as Yuanjing, Nantang, also Mengzhu in his late life, is one of the renowned military strategists and patriotic general leader of the Ming Dynasty, and one best-known national hero in Chinese history. Born in an army family, Qi had aspired to serve in the army and fight for his country and people since his childhood. He once wrote "Titles in palace aren’t the ambitions I am to fulfill, but my land standing in peace is the dream to pursue." Throughout his whole battling life, Qi is best known for the great victory in the fight against Japanese pirates, and during which, his great leadership and unyielding bravery, and his innovations in the reinforcement of the Great Wall for military strategies. There are folk legends saying that a kind of baked cake named "Guang Bing", consumed by Fujian people, was originally baked for Qi's Army. In 1562, when Qi was leading his troops to fight Japanese pirates along the coasts of Zhejiang and Fujian, in order to thank their arduous fights and to wrestle against hunger along the battles, local people made foods for them. Among the foods, there was a kind of cakes in the shape of bronze coins, the size of palm with a hole in the center. These cakes will be well-preserved for a long period and easy to be strung together, which provided a sufficient food supply and great convenience to Qi's Army in seizing the victory against Japanese pirates. In commemoration of the victory led by Qi's Army, the baked cakes were named "Guang Bing", showing the love and respect that people have for the great general leader. At the age of 60, Qi Jiguang passed away in his hometown of poverty and sickness. He was given a posthumous name Wuyi.
