You have to eat three countries’ cuisine for the rest of your life. What are they?

Grayson Kent, lives in Los Angeles
I live in Los Angeles, which is known for its amazing food diversity. Still, if I had to pick…
Japanese
This one’s kind of a no-brainer. Ramen, udon and gyoza are some of my favorite comfort foods; besides, sushi is incredible. What I like best about Japanese cuisine is that it manages to be very flavorful without being super spicy; as someone who can’t tolerate spice very well, it helps to have flavors such as shiso, yuzu and dashi instead.
Beyond that, Japanese snacks are incredible! From savory snacks like Pretz and arare crackers to sweet snacks like Hi-Chew, Pocky and Meiji mushrooms, Japanese supermarket aisles are the best.
2. Italian
Again, this one was a no-brainer. I might be a little bit biased because my grandparents are Italian, but i piatti italiani are the best. Not only is the pasta great (can you tell that I’m a carb lover?), but so are the salads, the risottos, and the desserts (gelato and cannoli for the win!)
I think the main thing that makes Italian food great is the sauces. Italy has so much food diversity: any two given cities that are even just an hour away from one another will have incredibly different regional dishes. The north is known for its cream sauces and pesto (my absolute favorite pasta sauce) and the south for its spice and tomatoes. Italy knows how to combine sauces with meats, vegetables and carbs to create amazing dishes. I also love truffle and truffle oil, and Italy has the best truffles in the world!
I have to admit, the last one was really hard to come up with. I wanted to pick Mexican food; then again, apparently American Mexican food isn’t that authentic. (Maybe it is where I live in SoCal?) Korean and Thai were possibilities, but they’re not my absolute favorites. American wasn’t even a thought: the United States are so big that there’s no one “American” cuisine. (Don’t believe me? Look up New England’s food. Then look up Louisianan food. You’ll see the difference.)
I finally decided on one last cuisine…
3. Levantine
The Levant isn’t technically a country; it’s the eastern border of the Mediterranean, including Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Jordan, and Cyprus (and, some would argue (in terms of cuisine), Turkey and Greece). But, each country’s recipes are very similar. With very fresh ingredients and a balance of vegetable and meat dishes, Levantine cuisine tastes both healthy and delicious. From spreads like hummus and baba ghanoush to kebab to pickled turnips, there’s a lot to love.
I think the ingredients make a big difference in Levantine food. Pomegranate seeds add a lot of tartness to savory recipes; good olive oil makes all the difference, too. However, my favorite flavor is toum- aka Lebanese garlic sauce. it’s good on any meat and delicious.
Those are my picks! Then again, if this were about desserts, two countries come to mind…
France
Duh. If anyone knows how to make good pastries, it’s the French. I love macarons, palmiers, galettes de roi and profiteroles especially. Maybe I’m biased here, too: I speak fluent French and have visited Paris several times. Then again, who could resist a good nutella crêpe?
2. The United States
The U.S. might seem unusual for desserts. Non-Americans, you might be asking yourself, “Aren’t these the people who make sandwich cookies out of chemicals? The ones with nasty neon candy?” While that’s true, the United States is responsible for a lot of amazing treats. From chocolate chip cookies…
…To New York Cheesecake (my absolute favorite)…
… to carrot cake…
… to key lime pie, the U.S. has some truly iconic desserts.
My mouth is watering now. Time to make a cheesecake!

The US has some fantastic desserts, and among them cinnamon rolls and pumpkin pies - these are among the best dishes I’ve had in the US.
Levantine cuisine has been a point of interest for the numerous vegetarian options. Falafel, hummus and the salads they make there are truly great.
Were I to pick comfort food, though, good old South Indian food would rank highest, perhaps followed by North Indian and Thai food.

Literally none of the deserts you mentioned originated from the US. Just because a specific food is made in the US, doesn’t mean it’s their cuisine.
The only original cuisine the US has is the one from Native Americans, everything else was brought to the US by immigrants.

What about Austria? Austrian pastries and Konditerei outclass the French in every way.

奥地利糕点和Konditerei(一种业务,通常提供各种各样的糕点)在各个方面都超过了法国。

I actually have an interesting note on that: French breakfast pastries (croissants, raisin rolls, etc.) are called “Viennoiseries”… literally, “food from Vienna!” While I haven’t gotten around to trying real Austrian pastries (unfortunately, L.A. isn’t known for its Germanic/Scandinavian food, so I don’t know of any Austrian restaurants), I love the French spinoffs!
That being said, I really, really want to try sachertorte. It looks so good!!!

why not indian

Grayson Kent
I love the desserts (especially jalebi); however, because I can’t handle spicy food, I feel like I can’t really enjoy all the amazing dishes without being overwhelmed. I wish I could- Indian recipes look and smell incredible!

If I were to only be able to eat 3 countries’ cuisines there would definetely be 2 main factors to take into account: they be very different from one another and that they be cuisines of large countries with many different dishes and flavours (sorry Liechtenstein). That being said here´s my list:
Chinese- Soooooo many diferent dishes and flavours, the sauces are amazing, the soups to die for, and fried rice has to be one my top 3 favorites foods (if not my favorite). I grew up with the Americanized version, but later trying real Chinese food completely blew my mind.
Some of my favorite dishes
Hotpot
Sweet and Sour Pork
Wonton Soup
Pork Buns
and last but definitely not least, Fried Rice
Next would be Mexican- So diverse, in America we tend to think that Mexican food is all tacos and burritos but it is so much more than that (PLEASE ANYONE THAT HAS NOT TRIED MOLE DO IT INMEDIATELY). The great thing about Mexican food is that everything is so flavourful, just try comparing tortilla chips and salsa to that cheap complementary bread and butter they serve in American restaurants.
Mole Poblano with Chicken
Enchiladas Suizas
Torre de Mariscos
Chile Relleno
and to finish it off, the famous Tacos al Pastor
To round of this list I have to end it with probably one of the lesser known cuisines and that is……
Argentine- After all home is where the heart is, and despite being born and raised in the USA, my parents are from Argentina. So while other kids would fill up on mac and cheese or pb&j sandwiches, in my house we ate milanesas and empanadas. Many people don’t realize also just how big and diverse Argentina is, it’s the 8th biggest country in the world and was the country to recieve the most european inmigration after the USA. Argentine food basically includes all Italian food (as this was the most important inmigration group and about 63% of Argentines are of Italian descent), but with an important Spanish influence and local flair. Fun fact Argentina is the worlds biggest beef consumer by FAR with the average Argentine eating 150 to 200 pounds of beef per year, 3 to 4 times more than the 57 pounds of beef Americans eat per year and the USA is second place after Argentina in beef consumption……
Milanesa Napolitana
Gnocchi
Empanadas
Fugazzeta Rellena
and most importantly ASADO!!!!
Looks like Arbys got some competition….
Definitely hard to leave out Indian and Thai food though.
Bonus- A cuisine I’d like to avoid the rest of my life: British, talk about bland food….

Torre de Mariscos(没找到中文名)

Fugazzeta Rellena

Ethan Moin
I wouldn´t compare british food with Argentine at all…
