I lived there for 1 year, as awhite-skinned young girl, a foreigner, working as a model.
Alone, using taxis, metro, buses andsometimes coming back to home at 3 am.
I wasn’t living in the city centre. It wasnot even an area for foreigners. It was a typical local Chinese area with smallstreets and smelly (sorry) fried tofu for breakfast.
And you know what? I am alive. I am stillalive and never had unpleasant accidents in Shenzhen.
So I can for sure say - it’s the safestplace I’ve ever been to.

Or another example. If you leave a bag orsomething else and be back in 5–10 minutes - rest assured, the bag will stay inthe same place. I even made my own experiment. I was sitting on the terrace (ina very crowded area) in KFC and realized that I forgot sauce for my fries. Okwell. I just stood up, left all my stuff.
I would NEVER. DO. IT. IN. MY. NATIVE.COUNTRY. Because it would be the last time I would see my bag, phone and otherstuff. I was absent for around 4 minutes… and you know what? I returned, and ofcourse everything was in the same place. And it was every time like this.
The biggest concern about missing stuff inShenzhen would be the cleaning lady, who can just take it and throw it away :)
In China I began to feel so relaxed aboutbeing safe, that I got used to this feeling. And I was robbed because of thisin Thailand because yeah, I just left my phone on the bike and left to feedbirdies. And when I returned in 5 minutes, of course there was no phone. Infucking 5 minutes.
But that taught me to be more cautiousoutside of China.
What makes Shenzhen so safe?
Educated people
What is the age mostly for troublemakersall over the world? Teenagers. Because their minds are turning upside down, they are very vulnerable for all wrong inceptions and kids are very easy to bepersuaded to become bandits.
In Shenzhen I very rarely even seeteenagers on the street.
Ok well, only a few times. In school uniform. They had very dangerous look :)
Because they are studying. The whole day. They have school classes, they have extra activities. But for sure they are notwasting their time on the streets.
That really astonished me a lot.

I lived in Shenzhen for about a year. It isan extremely well-planned city, which was just a fishing village 30 years ago.Now it has a population of about 7 million. Originally, only the best people inChina were allowed in but since 2006 anybody can go there. Many people work inelectronics factories in the outlying suburbs (e.g. Longgang, Longhua, Baoan),a lot of them domestic migrants from other parts of Guangdong, Hunan and Hubeiprovinces and the rest of China. Many famous companies are headquartered there, such as Huawei, 10 cent (Wechat, QQ) and Taiwanese Apple manufacturer FoxConn(now relocated to Henan). So if you live in Shenzhen I would say you are eithera “big fish” working for one of these companies in software or hardware, or youare a factory worker in the suburbs. The life is very interesting because it isa mixture of cultures from around China (plenty of restaurants with Sichuan ,Muslim, Dongbei and Western food - lots of Starbucks and bars) and even thoughit is part of Guangdong people speak Mandarin Chinese rather than Cantonese. The Metro subway train system is excellent, as well as the bus and intercityhigh speed train services. There are nice beaches nearby, and mountains such asWutong Shan, which has an artists village. If you need to (e.g. visa run), youcan go to Hong Kong very easily in a less than one hour via the Metro or bus orferry. In my opinion, Shenzhen is one of the best cities in the world.

I lived in Shenzhen for 24 days, but I'dlike to share my views.
It is one of the beautiful and modernplaces in China.
People there are so amazing, they will goout of their way just to help you. I have written one answer on how a motherdaughter went out of their way just to help us get back to our apartment.
It's a very clean place, there are cleanerswho clean the place every now and they do their work diligently and even thecivilians make sure they don't litter and even if someone else littered, arandom civilian will pick it up and put it in thrash, I personally witnessedthis. Rare scenario in India though.
I have become friends with locals during my24 day trip and I am still in touch with them. They all are so sweet andlovely.
Language was a barrier but people triedtheir best to converse in English and we tried our best to speak Chinese.Though I have learned some words whole living there and it was very handy, andlocals love it when foreigners use their language. When I spoke in brokenChinese with one local, he smiled and he looked so happy.
The only problem I faced there was FOOD.Yep. You hardly find and vegetarian restaurant over there. If you are avegetarian, you will find a tough time there.
Lastly, again, PEOPLE THERE ARE SO KIND ANDHELPFUL. THEY ARE VERY SWEET AND LOVELY.
I will definitely visit Shenzhen onceagain.
