A short while back, pop-rap it-girl NickiMinaj unveiled Super Bass, a single that first appeared as a bonus track on thedeluxe edition of her platinum-selling debut Pink Friday. It now seems to be reaching critical mass. Just since last Friday, I've heard the song roughly 25times I've heard it pumping out of cars and playing on MTV Jams, not to mention the repeat spins on my home stereo, often at the request of my girlfriend andher visiting sister. Even the pizza shop guy in my neighborhood had it looping through YouTube on his flat screen. When I asked if he was a fan, heimpartially explained that it was because she's famous and that 'Super Bass' is very, very good.

To say the least. Super Bass has theeffervescence that signifies the start of summer but also has the goods tocarry you the whole way through-- you can't help but fantasize about how muchfun you'll be having to this thing over the coming months. But for somethingthis balmy and love-crazy, not much external stimuli is necessary. And it worksjust as well in front of the mirror as it does in the club, thanks to producerKane Beatz's quasi-futuristic take on Miami booty-bass music (sort of aguarantee, given the title) paired with that delectable, cotton candy-glazedhook.

But most importantly, it marks the perfectmix of what we've hoped Nicki Minaj would become. After her double-take of aguest spot on Monster made her a household name, some were disappointed in PinkFriday's soft-edged approach-- too many Right Thru Mes, not enough Did It on'Ems. Super Bass isn't shy about its pop side, but from a rap standpoint,Nicki's in pristine form too, flexing and goofing in a confident double-time(You're so shy and I'm lovin' your tie You're like slicker than the guy withthe thing on his eye!). For a woman who's had a couple of years' worth ofwonderful little moments, this might be her first perfect big one.
