试译唐边塞诗二首
近日读诗，每梦唐时边塞之事，或大漠之苍茫旷远，或征战之荣辱喜悲，辗转反侧。试以西洋英吉利国之文，窃译诗二首，应一时之兴而作，不足挂齿
The Song of the Yen-Gao Shi
开元二十六年，客有从元戎出塞而还者，作《燕歌行》以示。适感征戍之事，因而和焉
In the 26th year of Kaiyuan, a guest who went out of the frontier with generals then came back wrote me The Song of the Yen. Having feelings of the war, I write this song to accompany
汉家烟尘在东北
Northeast frontier of Han, alarm smokes spread
汉将辞家破残贼
To strike against foes, generals leave homes
男儿本自重横行
Our warriors’re always proud to ride ahead
天子非常赐颜色
And Emperor calls, specially bestows
摐金伐鼓下榆关
They march through Elm Pass, beating gongs and drums
旌旆逶迤碣石间
Along Mount Tablet, streams of banners wind
校尉羽书飞瀚海
Flew over seas of sand, plume order comes
单于猎火照狼山
When Mount Wolf’s lit by Tartar Chief behind
山川萧条极边土
Remote and desolate, on border plains
胡骑凭陵杂风雨
The hostile horsemen charge down like a storm
战士军前半死生
At frontlines, half of soldiers’ blood is drained
美人帐下犹歌舞
While someone back, still watches at beauties’ forms
大漠穷秋塞草腓
In desert, wild grass wilts as autumn fades
孤城落日斗兵稀
By lone fort, fights die down as sun descends
身当恩遇常轻敌
Bestowed, to foes they always underrate
力尽关山未解围
Besieged, they can’t break through with strength near end
铁衣远戍辛勤久
In armours, weary guards stand far apart
玉箸应啼别离后
At chambers, Jade Chopsticks shed tears like rain
少妇城南欲断肠
In southern towns, women would break their hearts
征人蓟北空回首
At nothern fronts, their men look back in vain
边庭飘飖那可度
Wars burn the lands, make passers hold their breath
绝域苍茫无所有
On borders distant, thus their lives are sold
杀气三时作阵云
All day, war clouds above suffused with death
寒声一夜传刁斗
All night, Watch beats beneath infused with cold
相看白刃血纷纷
See, blood stains blades all red, they were once white
死节从来岂顾勋
Does anyone dead care about his feat?
君不见沙场征战苦
Don’t you know, how their suffering to fight?

北风卷地白草折
With north wind roars by ground, the sere grass curls
胡天八月即飞雪
In alien sky, in e’en eighth month snow whirls
忽如一夜春风来
As if spring breeze had just blown back o’ernight
千树万树梨花开
On thousand branch’s pear blossoms maybe thrive
散入珠帘湿罗幕
Snow flies across pearl blinds, wets silken screen
狐裘不暖锦衾薄
No warmth brocade quilts and fox furs between
将军角弓不得控
Cannot the gen’ral draw his rigid bow
都护铁衣冷难着
Nor Viceroy wear his armour for its cold
瀚海阑干百丈冰
The desert’s pressed by piles of criss cross ice
愁云惨淡万里凝
For miles airs freeze and gloomy clouds heave sighs
中军置酒饮归客
Headquarters set our wine for homeward guest
胡琴琵琶与羌笛
With Huqins, pipas and pipes for the best
纷纷暮雪下辕门
Above camp gate,’t falls swirls of snow at dusk
风掣红旗冻不翻
The frozen red flag stiffens though wind tugs
轮台东门送君去
At Luntai’s east gate we bid him goodbye
去时雪满天山路
As snow fills mountains piercing through the sky
山回路转不见君
Eyes lose his form beyond those winding roads
雪上空留马行处
With only fading tracks of horse on snow
