I am sharing an incident which will clearly explain why India is poor in sports.
This happened when I was 15 years old. I was good in studies, and like most of the middle class Indian parents, my parents also had great expectations from me. Somehow, I didn’t perform well in one term, which led to the worst academic result of my whole school life. In that same term, I won 3 gold medals in my school sports championship and was awarded as the best sportsperson of the year. We were given the academic results and sports awards and certificates on the same day. I returned home and told her about both the sports and academic results. She went fuming on me and swung a stick lying beside her at me. It missed me but hit the sports certificate on my hand, which caused it to tear from the edge. Even today, when I see the certificate, I can clearly remember that incident. It has a great symbolic significance of what is wrong in this country.
I am anonymous because I don’t want people to judge my mother based on that incident. We come from a lower middle class in a small city called Nagpur. My parents, especially my mother worked very hard and made a lot of sacrifices to provide me quality education from one of the best schools in Nagpur. My mother now accepts that that was the worst thing she could have done to me. I have now found a different passion, and happy with it. I couldn’t have done better without my mother.
It is very easy to blame the government, system, sports officials, and my mother in this case without knowing the underlying cause of the problem. India is a developing country. We are rising high, and rising fast. Most of India’s youth are the first generation to receive a quality education. Our parents don’t want to face difficulties like them and think that education is the only way to better their children’s life. When more than half of the population is stuck in abject poverty, education will be given preference over sports. And seeing the condition of sports persons in the country (obviously keeping aside Cricket), why would any parent encourage their child to sports! The only people we can blame is us- the society which sees sports merely as a hobby, the individual who is so engrossed only in some sports like cricket and questions the condition of sports only once every four years, and the system where corruption, nepotism, and ignorance flourish. Unless our perception towards sports changes, no amount of funding and training can make a significant difference.

There is one sport that Indians can take up.
This sport does not require a ground to play in,
this sport results in high endurance and physical conditioning, muscle development.
This sport is best for a cramped country like India.
This sport makes men out of boys.
The sport has connections to ancient India.
The sport is called Muay Thai.

I was wondering too about why India with so huge population isn’t good in sports but now I see the point. Because it says that you as the nation have scientific tradition. You devote yourself to be good engineers or scientists like Bose or Ramanujan because you can and because you have good enough teachers. For African countries sports seems to be almost the only chance to change a social status. Spending money on education is much more reasonable than on sports. As an engineer you earn reasonable money but as a sportsman only when you are outstanding I guess.

I mostly agree, except for one point:
“When more than half of the population is stuck in abject poverty, education will be given preference over sports.”
China’s rate of poverty is currently 24% as compared to India’s 16%
As we all know, China outperforms us in sports literally everywhere. China won 46 medals as compared to India's 1 medal this Olympics.

i agree with you 90%. but the other 5% goes to our diet(as we all know most professional sports in other countries take lots of protien diet, i mean non-veg food), while we most indians take loks of carbohydrates and fats on our diet. the other 5% goes to our mentality, regional background and outlook

The culture in India historically has focused more on intellectual pursuits (mathematics), spirituality (Himduism, Buddhism) and mind-body connectedness (yoga, meditation), and less on athletic prowess and sporting events. The sports that it has traditionally excelled in (cricket, field hockey, badminton) all have their roots in the colonial era when they were imported by the British. It's a matter of priorities. Many just aren't that interested in a variety of sports
