The legendary Chinese science fiction trilogy is getting a Netflix series. Netflix on Tuesday announced that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones, are working on an adaptation of Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem trilogy as their first major project since signing exclusive contracts with the streaming service last year.

Known formally as the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, of which Three-Body Problem is the first installment, the novels were originally published in China starting in 2008 and later translated into English. They’ve received critical acclaim for Liu’s stunning grasp of real-world technical and scientific concepts — The New Yorker calls him China’s answer to Arthur C. Clarke — and the immense scope of the trilogy’s narrative, which spans from China’s Cultural Revolution in the 1960s to universe-spanning events many thousands of years into the future.

I’m not a fan of GoT’s last seasons but calling them "hacks" because they sort of failed to deliver toward the end of GoT, given the constraints they were working with (budget, an unfinished storyline, etc), is frankly a stretch.

NaeemTHM:It’s crazy right? The first 3 or 4 seasons of GoT is the absolute pinnacle of television in my opinion. And that final season just…killed my desire to even rewatch it. And yet, if I may say something incredibly unpopular, I don’t think we should completely write off D&D. Don’t get me wrong, they deserve the hate for ruining the Game of Thrones ending. But they were still heavily involved with the very best of GoT as well. I might actually check this new show out at some point. D&D hate aside.

xPutNameHerex:I’m not even sure it was an issue of not having existing stories to adapt, but rather it almost appeared that Benioff and Weiss just got…bored of making Game of Thrones. It’s pretty much known that HBO wanted to give them more episodes (more seasons even), but especially once they hit the shorter seasons 7 and 8, there was a general "OK, what’s do we need to hit to get this over with" vibe? It makes for some fantastic set pieces, but something about the vibe behind it just felt off.

At the very least, it suggests that D&D are excellent at adapting written work, even if they suck at writing from scratch. And since this is a completed series, the latter shouldn’t be a problem.

Creative team aside, the books span so much time and space in such a way I can’t even imagine an on screen adaption. I believe this may be the third attempt at a Three-Body problem adaptation. One Chinese studio started production and canned it and then I think another floated the possibility but stopped preproduction. I can see the first book being adapted, maybe the second, but the third? This is a tall order and I wish them luck.

评论12: pj_camp:Seriously? Because it was his stunning ignorance of real world technical and scientific concepts that irritated me. Like saying the Hubble telescope uses a big lens instead of a big mirror. That isn’t hard to get right. His grasp of elementary particle physics is not even sophisticated enough to pass on Star Trek. It is on the level of Star Wars using parsecs to measure time. I’m a scientist. I love hard SF. Even when it asserts something physically impossible, using speculative concepts in a clever way to justify it is OK. But this is not that. I appear to be in a minority in thinking that Liu’s trilogy is irredeemably stupid, but that’s what I think. I threw volume 2 against the wall when the entire Earth fleet lined up for easy slaughter, confident that the spectacle of their fleet would so impress an alien race that had sworn to destroy them that it wasn’t even worth having a reserve. Partly, I suspect that Western expectations of a story may be different from Eastern. But getting basic facts wrong and wrapping those errors around an idiot plot is not good writing.

prestidigitation:Buddy, you’re not alone… My own moment of thinking "this is so stupid" is the MacGuffin that Liu invented to prevent humanity from developing advanced technology. Oh, a supercomputer folded into the size of an atom, traveling faster than light (even though the aliens themselves are limited to the speed of light), capable of stopping all advanced physics research in the world, but not capable of any physical actions? Why not just say that a wild-eyed unicorn appeared on Earth and gored to death all of its physicists? That’s just as believable, and a good deal more fun.

Considering the hack job they did finishing up Game of Thrones, my concern is even if they attempt to pull this off, they’ll just do what they did on GoT, start out strong and then get lazy as they rush to finish it and move onto something else.
