【阅前提示】本篇外语原文摘自苏格兰经学家理雅各先生翻译种花家论语而成的《The Chinese Classics · Confucian Analects》。理雅各先生出生于1815（清嘉庆二十年），一生致力于中西方文化交流，其翻译注释儒墨道三家经典，终成“The Chinese Classics”系列。不过需强调，理雅各先生虽然非常令我敬佩，但不得不说，由于其是传教士，因此著作中不可避免有一些夹带，还望小伙伴们注意辨别。黑字是原文，彩字是我做的备注。

曾子曰、慎終追遠、民德歸厚矣

The philosopher Tsang said,'Let there be a careful attention to perform the funeral rites to parents, and let them be followed when long gone with the ceremonies of sacrifice;-- then the virtue of the people will resume its proper excellence.'

【山译】哲人曾子说过，要十分注意父母葬礼的举办，即使很久之后也要不断举行祭祀。只有这样做了，人民的道德水平才会恢复到其最好的时候。

【01】THE GOOD EFFECT OF ATTENTION OF THE PART OF PRINCES TO THE OFFICES TO THE DEAD:-AN ADMONITION OF TSANG SHAN.

【山译】部分贵族重视人民生前身后事所带来的良好影响——一个来自曾参的劝告。

【山注1】此句为“辽人版”版本，而“南天版”中PRINCES变为了SUPERIORS，即上级长官。我揣摩了一下，感觉辽人版这个贵族君主要比上级长官好一点，故此处使用辽人版。

【02】終，'the end',=death,and远,'distant'have both the force of adjectives,='the dead'and 'the departed'or 'the long gone'.

【山译】“终”是结束的意思即死亡。“远”是遥远的意思，两个字是精神层面的形容词。可译为死亡与离去乃止远去。

【山注1】人死为终。此处特指父母的去世。而“远”指的是祖先。

【03】慎and追mean,'to be careful of,'to follow',but their application is as in the translation.

【山译】“慎”和“追”意思分别是小心慎重以及跟随。它们在语言中的应用与此翻译中的一样。

【山注1】慎终追远：慎终者丧尽其哀；追远者祭尽其敬。

【04】厚,'thick',in opposition to薄,'thin',metaphorically,=good,excellent.

【山译】厚的反义词是薄，引申一下，厚是好与优秀的意思。

【05】The force of 归,'to return',is to show that this virtue is naturally proper to the people.

【山译】“归”的意思是返回，这是在说人民的美德自然而然的达到适合的状态。
