[opens a 1.5L water bottle and take a sip] Do anyone know what this is?
Well, this is a bottle of radioactive water from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear pla —No, no, seriously, this is just a bottle of fresh water, from Woolworths. (Suddenly serious) 10 years later though, we might actually find bottled water radioactive, alongside everything else which also becomes radioactive. Those radioactive substances are from an accident long, long ago.
12 years ago, a tsunami near Fukushima cut the electricity used to pump cold water to cool the nuclear reactors in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. This caused the fuel to overheat, melting through the container, and was exposed to the environment after explosions.[Images]
This exposure not only required water to cool the core down, but it also contaminates the ground water and rainwater which directly contacts the core. All that water contacted with core became radioactive. [video]As a response, Japanese government chose to filter the radioactive contents, then stored them in storage tanks. Six weeks ago, the Japanese authorities initiated the release of “treated water” , or 処理水(Shori si) in Japanese—(Looking at Luna(注:一名日裔同学), in an overexaggerated “serious” tone) I warn you do not tell everyone if I spelled it wrong, or I will murder you!
According to Japanese government, the “treated water” is “safe under drink water standards” and is therefore “safe” to release into the ocean. However, the plan also attracted much controversy around the globe.
Now, if this bottle of water is actually filled with that “treated” water, would you take a drink? (Pause) I would not, which is why I think the radioactive water should not have been released into the ocean and should be stopped as soon as possible.
BP1- “treated water”?
To begin, I would like to inform everyone about the effects of radioactive waste. [image] It ejects neutrons out of it rapidly, all with the potential to break countless strands of DNA in countless cells, as neutrons will not stop after piercing one cell. Impacted cells may either unable to reproduce; or they become defective and so will the cells it reproduces; or they develop into cancers. To above reasons, radioactive waste severely threatens all organisms near it.
Now, let us have a look at water stored in Fukushima. That is water which directly contacted the exposed core, treated under ALPS, which stands for Advanced Liquid Processing System, but still contains some radioactive substances. Interestingly, radioactive waste is “a type of hazardous waste that contains radioactive material”, which matches radioactive water in Fukushima. Em…
Why do I have to clarify that? Because the name of a concept affects how we understand it. How would you feel about “treated water”? In my opinion it is close to industrial wastewater. Will “radioactive water” sound the same? No, they are radioactive wastes. Obviously, people will not regulate industrial wastewater as seriously as radioactive wastes, which is why now hundreds of tonnes of those wastes are flowing into the Pacific each day!
BP2-Wolf in sheep’s clothing
Although the Japanese government depicts that their “treated” water is safe, which the examination to “treated water samples” by “International Atomic Energy Agency”, or IAEA supports, the authority of those statements are weak, even if IAEA is the United Nation equivalent in nuclear field. Let us unwrap those statements “supported” by “science”. ALPS is a filter system developed by Japan used only in Fukushima, its effect is not yet verified globally; IAEA did examine water samples, but the samples are directly given by Japanese government. They can even offer IAEA the bottle of water in my hand right now(body language), and tell them, “Hey, this is the water sample from Fukushima” if Tokyo feels like it. Because of that, even the statement IAEA made also mentioned that it will not take any responsibilities. Now, based on those scientific nonsense, Japanese authorities say, “Our release is supported by science”, which, well… is biased.
BP3-Not “Them” but “Us”
What will happen to humanity when radioactive substances spread throughout the Pacific? One academic publication claimed the total global social welfare cost could exceed US$200 billion, but to be honest, we don’t know. As Japan acknowledges radioactive water as “treated water”, almost no research is conducted; we better not to take risks.
Although the radioactive water Japan releases will probably not going to directly kill, Japan acts very irresponsibly. Japan placed the whole world into a bet, betting that side effects for releasing nuclear wastes into the ocean will be negligible. Yet, If Japan lost the bet, everyone would face the consequences equally.
Possibly, in ten years, we will be able to enjoy a radioactive shower at home in Melbourne. By that point, not as much can be done.
Reflection
The famous physicist Albert Einstein once said, “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” In fact, if the “treated water” is literally under “drink water standards”, there are no good rationales to release the water into the ocean; if it is not drinkable, then it is not as safe as Japan illustrates and should not be released either. Since Japan is a country lack of fresh water, I even have a solution to that “treated water” right here: desalinate the treated water, pack that water into this bottle (prop) and sell it as drink water.
The question comes back though——
Would you take a drink?
